HAVERFORD, PA--The first and second halves looked very different when The Haverford School (THS) hosted Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (SCHA) in Inter Ac League lacrosse on a gorgeous spring afternoon Tuesday, April 23, 2019. The Haverford School built a 10-2 halftime lead but SCHA fought back after that and so Haverford ultimately secured a much tighter 13-10 victory.

“At halftime, our captains spoke to us and they really got to us,” said SCHA sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Guzik. “They were saying that we really need to start playing our style of lacrosse.”

The Fords got going immediately and never gave up.

“We executed from the start,” said Haverford’s senior attacker Adam Salvaggio. “It was just a good win.”

The Haverford School improved its record to 9-3 on the season. SCHA dropped to 7-5.

“Guys played hard,” said SCHA head coach Brian Dougherty. “Our guys did a good job battling.”

Senior midfielder Matthew Bown gave the Devils a quick 1-0 surplus but that turned out to be very brief. Haverford’s junior attacker Pearse Glavin took a 2-0 sprint of his own that gave the Fords what ended up being a permanent advantage. Salvaggio scored as did junior midfielder Jack Leary before the conclusion of the opening quarter.

Sophomore midfielder Quintin Campbell continued the run early in the second quarter for the Fords, but SCHA junior attacker Ethan Gyllenhaal stopped it with a goal. THS played out the remainder of the first half securing goals by sophomore attack Nolan Cooleen, freshman defender Will Costin, senior midfielder Gavin Burke, Leary and senior midfielder Mac Costin.

SCHA came back prepared for a brand-new game. Senior midfielder Peter Garno scored for Haverford as did Glavin (hat trick) but a time out taken by Springside changed started to change the game’s momentum. Gyllenhaal tallied his second goal of the day and sophomore attack Luke Neverosky cut the score to 12-4.

The fourth quarter was dominated by SCHA’s offense. Junior midfielder Rex Leininger and Gyllenhaal (four goals) both scored twice. Neverosky added another goal. The only Haverford goal of this period came from the stick of junior midfielder Jake Spencer and that was the game.

Haverford senior Adam Salvaggio talks about his team's execution:

SCHA junior Ethan Gyllenhaal talks about the Blue Devils' strong second half:

Haverford freshman goalie Chuck Cacciutti talks about staying composed late in the game:

SCHA sophomore goaltender Tyler Guzik was proud of his defense for stepping up in the second half:

“They pulled back at the end,” said Salvaggio. “We were able to keep the intensity up the rest of the game and finish it off.”

Senior goalkeepers Sage Garito and Rob Esgro along with freshman goalkeeper Chuck Cacciutti paced the Ford’s defense.

“Defense helped really well,” said Cacciutti. “I think we played well together as a whole.”

Guzik played goaltender for the entire game.
