PHILADELPHIA –Technically speaking, it only counted as one win. In the grand scheme of things? That’s debatable.

On a somewhat frigid Sunday afternoon at Vogt Playground in Northeast Philly, St. Hubert’s stunned previously unbeaten Archbishop Ryan, 10-0. A five-run sixth inning by the Bambies halted the game because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Beating the defending champion Ragdolls lowered their record to 8-1 and severed their 18-game Catholic League winning streak dating back to last year. Their last defeat occurred on April 17, 2018, a 9-5 loss at Archbishop Wood that ended on a dramatic, walk-off grand slam by since-graduated Taylor Schwartz.

“We came out today with a purpose,” said senior Jordan Frye, who belted three hits and knocked in three runs. “We really played the game the right way.”

With one out in the first inning, Frye’s double scored senior lead-off hitter Lindsey Davies with what proved to be the only run Hubert’s would need. In the fifth, Hubert’s sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs.

In the sixth, the Bambies tallied six more off two different pitchers. The game finished when senior Erin Hogan’s single to left scored senior Riley Gorman from third base.

“We kept coming and that’s what we talked about,” said Hubert’s coach Dave Schafer, who then referred to losses to Archbishop Carroll and Lansdale Catholic in which the Bambies opened sizeable leads but ultimately lost. “We have a lot of respect for Ryan. There was always a chance they could come back.”

Davies was brilliant on the mound. Despite a slight mist and temperature in the early 50’s, last year’s third-team All-Catholic pitcher kept the Ragdolls guessing and was never in any danger.

Regardless of the score, Davies remained focused, reminiscent of her earlier dominance over John W. Hallahan (5-0), Little Flower (8-1), and Bonner-Prendergast (5-0), three teams poised to make the postseason.

“I was just trying to keep the ball dry, and keep my hand and finger tips warm so I could spin the ball better,” said Davies. “It all worked out.”

With two games left – road trips to Archbishop Wood and Conwell-Egan– the Bambies will try to remind themselves that as great a win as this, it still only counts as one game.

“I mean, our heads are probably a little bit big right now, but it will tone down,” said Davies. “It’s definitely a huge win for us.  We will try to keep the girls humble, but beating Ryan  . . . that’s huge.”

No two ways about it.
