PHILADELPHIA –This past school year, Philadelphia Sports Digest was proud to display the works of the following Jr. Reporters: Abigail and Maeve Riehman (Archbishop Carroll HS), Alex Duda (Father Judge HS), Liam Turnbach (La Salle College HS), Alexandra Conroy (Episcopal Academy) and John Leuzzi (St. Joseph’s Prep). These student reporters have contributed to enhancing the coverage of their high schools' athletic programs by taking photos, videos and writing stories throughout the fall, winter and spring sports seasons.

Abigail and Maeve Riehman, Archbishop Carroll HS:

For the past two years, Abby and Maeve Riehman have contributed photos for Archbishop Carroll’s girls’ volleyball, field hockey, girls’ basketball and girls’ lacrosse teams. As prominent Patriot athletes themselves, Abby and Maeve were attentive to detail in all of the photos and videos that they took of their peers displaying Archbishop Carroll’s athletes positive spirit.

This past spring, Abby showcased Carroll’s girls’ lacrosse team in a week-long #PSDTeamTakeover on PSD’s Instagram account in route to the Patriots' 19th consecutive Philadelphia Catholic League title.

“I think the best part (about being a Jr. Reporter) is being able to look back on the Instagram page or on the website and see all of the work myself and my teammates put in for our success,” said Abby Riehman. “I enjoyed being part of the PSD community, learning and engaging in new opportunities.”

Abby is planning on majoring in psychology and Maeve is an intended business major. You can catch Maeve on the field hockey field this fall at Rider University and Abby on the lacrosse field in the spring at Rowan University!

Alex Duda, Father Judge Jr. Reporter

Alex Duda, Father Judge High School:

This past year we were lucky enough to meet Alex on the football field, as he served as manager for Father Judge’s football team and eventually assumed the role as manager for the Crusaders' varsity basketball and lacrosse teams. During the fall, Alex contributed photos and videos for every Judge football game and also took occasional shots during Father Judge’s soccer season. His videography skills progressed during basketball season as he took multiple videos that were turned into highlight reels for PSD’s weekly basketball round-ups. While Alex served as lacrosse manager in the spring, he also would contribute baseball videos, as his brother Jeff was a sophomore catcher for the Crusaders.

Having the opportunity of being a junior reporter for Philly Sports Digest is one of my biggest take-aways I have from high school. I loved seeing my pictures and videos posted after every game. Even if we lost, seeing my name pop up next to PSD was an awesome feeling. I was able to capture some incredible moments for Father Judge’s football, basketball, lacrosse, and baseball teams,” said Duda. “My favorite part was being able to see my brother, Jeff, play varsity baseball up-close in the dugout, rather than far out in the stands. I never played any sports for Judge, but being able to give my little brother a high five or pat on the back when he came into the dugout after a good hit or nice play, is a memory that I will cherish forever. I always appreciated when players would acknowledge my work as a team manager, but there was no better feeling than seeing a player’s face light up after I told them I captured their game winning hit, touchdown, goal, or three-pointer.”

Besides being a top-notch videographer, Alex is also a fantastic magician! He has taken his talents to North Broad Street as a new manager for the Temple Owls Football team. Alex is planning on majoring in sport business at Temple University’s School of Sport, Tourism & Hospitality Management.

(Left) Liam Turnbach, La Salle College High School Jr. Reporter

Liam Turnbach, La Salle College HS:

Liam Turnbach began as a PSD Jr. Reporter during his junior year at La Salle. His progression behind the camera was impeccable. As a junior Liam took photos and videos of La Salle’s varsity soccer, basketball and lacrosse programs. His senior year, Liam continued honing his video and photography skills as manager of La Salle's football team, where he contributed a sideline view of all the action. His commitment to PSD in showcasing his high school's athletic programs continued with the Flyers' Cup, and baseball team.

Liam was also able to experience taking photos alongside many other accomplished photographers on the floor of the Palestra during the 2019 PCL boys’ basketball championship and at the NCAA men's lacrosse championship at the Linc.

My highlight for working with PSD is definitely all the opportunities I was privileged to have. Doesn’t seem like anything major, but having my pictures published benefited me greatly,” said Turnbach. “I was also able to shoot at the NCAA final four and develop a strong network of like-minded individuals in my field.

Liam is moving on to major in media studies and production at Temple University’s Klein College of Media & Communication and is planning on keeping his PSD portfolio active capturing Big 5 sporting events!

Alexandra Conroy, Episcopal Academy Jr. Reporter

Alexandra Conroy, Episcopal Academy:

Alexandra Conroy began as a PSD Jr. Reporter during her sophomore year at Episcopal Academy. She was always seen with a camera in hand at almost every EA sporting event from fall to spring. Her PSD portfolio contains images of EA varsity football, field hockey, boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ basketball, track and field, and girls' and boys' lacrosse to name a few. She also expanded out of her comfort zone, writing a full-length story about former Churchman Nick Alikakos during the 2017 basketball season. She also was not shy about expanding her portfolio out of Inter-Ac sports and covered a few PCL games including Roman Catholic soccer, the 2018 PCL girls’ volleyball championship, and the 2017 PCL girls’ field hockey championship

Alexandra had the opportunity to learn valuable photography tips from PSD's renowned sports photographer Zamani Feelings and had the opportunity to shoot a University of Pennsylvania football game at historic Franklin Field.

I enjoyed going to all the games and getting a chance to work alongside some amazing photographers, like at UPenn, and that has helped shaped me as a photographer and a journalist,” said Conroy.

Alexandra will be attending Hofstra University this fall  and plans to major in journalism with a minor in political science, all with a sports concentration!

John Leuzzi, St. Joseph’s Prep:

His name may sound familiar, and for good reason. John Leuzzi was a proud member and co-president of St. Joseph’s Prep’s student run radio broadcasting club. John could be heard weekly live broadcasting the Hawks' football, soccer, basketball and lacrosse games. During football season, John compiled a full article and on-camera interviews previewing the Hawk’s trip to the 2018 PIAA 6A state championship.

John Leuzzi, St. Joseph's Prep Jr. Reporter

The thing that I have enjoyed the most was through PSD and WSJP, the student broadcasting club at St. Joe’s Prep that I belonged to, I have been able to learn valuable skills, technics about sports journalism and broadcasting, two fields that I want to pursue in my life,” said Leuzzi. “Getting opportunities to cover some of the biggest events in the PCL have been possible because of this.”

John will be attending Marquette University and is planning to major in journalism while also minoring in digital media. John is already getting involved in the Marquette student community. This fall, he will be joining the Marquette Wire (@MU_Wire) sports desk as a sports reporter!

On behalf of the PSD staff, we want to thank you for your time and dedication and we wish all of our Jr. Reporters the best of luck on their collegiate journey!
