PHILADELPHIA-- When the opening whistle sounded for the start of the match between William Penn Charter School and the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur last Friday afternoon, the intensity was obvious. The Quakers were on a mission to their 4-0 victory.

Penn’s Charter’s offense was dominant. Within 10 minutes on the clock, junior Janae Stewart put a goal on the board assisted by senior Sara Shipon. The offense did not stop there, as the Quakers responded again with their second goal of the game by sophomore Kaila Rahn with a Shipon assist.

“We tried coming out strong, pressing hard so we can get that early lead and be comfortable in the second half.” Stewart said.

And they did just that, achieving a comforting three goal lead before the half, Penn Charter came out in the second with a more defensive mindset. Yet, the ball spent most of its time on the Irish’s side of the pitch. Notre Dame junior goalie Megan Mackey was very active making several stops against the aggressive Quaker offense.

Sealing the games destination was Stewart’s third goal of the game, assisted by none other than Shipon. The chemistry between the two upperclassmen was evident in this victory.  It seemed like things were clicking for number 13 and her team on Friday the 13th.

Despite this loss, the Irish continue to build on their strengths.

“I think from today’s loss we can take and see that we can compete with anyone in this league,” said Notre Dame junior Izzy Casale.

“We came out really fearless and was just working hard and playing to the potential that we know we can and although we didn’t win, we worked hard and showed ourselves and other teams in the league what we are capable of.”

The Quakers travel to Springside Chestnut Hill Academy this afternoon for more league action.

Next game for the Irish is away at SCHA on September 24.
