BLUE BELL, PA –The Philadelphia Catholic League golf championship took place Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019 at Blue Bell Country Club. The La Salle Explorers and Little Flower Sentinels triumphed finishing first overall in the team tournaments. Little Flower had taken home the PCL trophy before, but fell short last year. Therefore, it was quite an honor to come back together as a strong group of young women.
Leading the way for Little Flower was Kassidy Foley (112) who tied with Lansdale Catholic’s Rachel Panico in third place for female winners on the day.
“I was really excited to play,” said Foley. “It was really hot outside. We stuck through it. I had really good drives today.”
Joining Little Flower at the top of the team leaderboards were the La Salle College High School Explorers that finished with a score of 460.
La Salle has a strong championship history. The team has placed first 16 times over the course of the previous 18 years. La Salle’s Matt Lafond prevailed as the overall winner with a final score of 71. Teammate Steve Lorenzo (72) was directly behind him.
“It was a surprise,” said Lafond. “It was awesome.”
St. Joseph’s Prep (472) came in second in the boys’ tournament. The Hawks’ Nick Scarpone (74) finished third on the day. Teammate Joe Morganti (77) was recognized as the Player of the Year in PCL golf for being the leader in points during the regular season. He averaged 15.25.
“It was a great honor,” said Morgnati. “I pushed to get this. I’m glad I accomplished it.”
Freshman Lola Barnett of Archbishop Wood claimed the girls’ individual title with a low score of 88. Teammate and older sister Chaela Barnett (95) followed in second.
“I felt a little nervous,” said Lola Barnett. “Your nerves get over it as you go along. It feels like a blessing at the end of the day.”
Archbishop Wood’s boys’ team placed third with a score of 516. Placing fourth, fifth and sixth in the tournament were Bonner & Prendergast (527), Cardinal O’Hara (534) and Roman Catholic (568).
Those selected to represent the All-Catholic team will participate in the District 12 championship to be held Tuesday, October 8, at JC Melrose Country Club in Cheltenham.
“We’re excited for next week,” said Morganti. “I think we’re bound for a good week.”
