Archbishop Carroll Wins Inaugural Turkey Bowl Against Roman Catholic

PLYMOUTH MEETING -- A new Thanksgiving tradition between Roman Catholic and Archbishop Carroll football teams took place last Wednesday night.

The two teams took part in the inaugural Turkey Bowl football game on Thanksgiving Eve at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High school.

The two schools entered into a two-year agreement with Roman being the home team this year and Archbishop Carroll in 2020.

Students, parents, alumni and family members gathered to cheer on their respective teams.

Carroll won 15-7, ending their season with a 7-6 record making this their first winning season in 12 years.  It was a sweet victory for the Patriots after a tough loss to Bonner-Prendergast in the Philadelphia Catholic League 4A championship just a few weeks before.

QB Russell Minor-Shaw helped give the Patriots a 6-0 lead in the first quarter with a drive to Malachi Hansen for the 22-yard touchdown.

Carroll’s WR/DB Nick Lamey stepped in as quarterback in the second quarter as Minor-Shaw had to leave the game due to a shoulder injury.

Roman (5-7) took a 7-6 lead in the second quarter with a touchdown run by quarterback Jayden Pope. Pope would also leave the game in the third quarter from a shoulder injury.

Senior LB Richie Kimmel reigned on defense making two interceptions for the Patriots.

Carroll took a 9-7 lead at the half after an 18-yard field goal by Emmett McGill. It was Lamey’s pass in the third quarter to Hansen for a 37-yard touchdown that sealed the bowl victory.

Despite the loss, Roman’s head coach Rick Prete looks forward to keeping the tradition.

“We have a good draw. We are playing in a good program and a good  school in Carroll… I think this new tradition is a great step forward,” said Prete.

This win was extra special for second-year head coach Kyle Detweiler, who took his Patriot team to five wins last year and came close to PCL 4A title this year.

“An opportunity to end our season, for the seniors with a win but also giving Carroll its first winning football season since 2007 and that is just awesome for our guys who are graduating,” said Detweiler.

Next season, Carroll will be moving to 3A classification while remaining in the PCL Blue Division.
