CATHOLIC LEAGUE GAME OF THE WEEK

Who: Bonner-Prendergast vs. West Catholic

When: Noon Saturday, September 25

Where: South Philadelphia Supersite

Records: Bonner-Prendergast 3-1, 1-0; West Catholic 1-2, 1-0

Most Recent Performance: Bonner-Prendergast defeated Conwell-Egan, 36-20; West Catholic stopped Lansdale Catholic, 22-14.

Importance: For either team to win the Catholic League Blue Division title, this would be a crucial victory. For Bonner-Prendergast, entering next week’s contest against defending division champion Neumann-Goretti undefeated would add momentum against an opponent that handed the current Friar seniors their only league loss in 2019, thus costing them a PCL title. The Burrs, meanwhile, would open the eyes of those overlooking them.

Bonner-Prendergast Notes: Senior Mason Peterson continues to wrack up gaudy numbers. After rushing for 240 yards and three touchdowns on only 16 carries against Conwell-Egan, Peterson has averaged 6.1 yards per rush.

West Catholic Notes: After losing to Episcopal Academy and Malvern Prep by a combined 73-12, the Burrs were in desperate need of positive energy, afforded them by defeating Lansdale Catholic . . . The Burrs rely mostly on their running ability. Senior Zymeen Howell and junior K’saan Green both average more than five yards per carry . . . Senior Marcel Jackson has averaged 25 yards per kick return.

FRIAR  CHAT:

“They have a nice running game,” said senior safety Damir Williams-Bey. “But I feel as though we will force them to pass and get them out of their comfort zone, which will give our defensive backs chances to make plays on the ball.

“This next game is very important because in Catholic League play every game counts, and also it’s the next one; our goal as a team is to go 1-0 every week. Us as a team have to play more disciplined and know our alignments and our assignments because we messed up a little last week and that caused some big plays.”

BURR CHAT:

“I think it’s going to be a dog fight,” said senior wide receiver and defensive back Naidir Hilliard. “This is game is definitely going to separate the boys from men, and I’m strongly confident my team and I will come out with the ‘W.’

“The biggest concern is stopping their run game. They have a good running back and a nice offensive line.”

Prediction: At least one person predicted that Bonner-Prendergast would fall to a very strong Conwell-Egan team last week. That guy is still scraping off egg from his cheeks. The Friars’ lethal rushing attack wears out their competition, and the Burrs already dealt with something similar in their previous two defeats. With Peterson penetrating the secondary on a consistent basis, Bonner-Prendergast will head into a key match-up against Neumann Goretti next week on a high note after a 37-12 victory.
