ROSEMONT, PA. Regulation and overtime turned out to be too short for either team to secure a victory when the Agnes Irwin Owls hosted the Germantown Academy Patriots in Inter-Ac League field hockey action Tuesday, October 19, 2021. When the clock expired after one round of overtime, the 1-1 score was declared official.

Determination…Check. Physicality…Check, Skill…Check.

Both teams have come a long way since the beginning of the season and brought it all onto the field in a highly competitive league matchup.

Agnes Irwin, (3-2-1) league, has shown growth as a team and assimilate well on both the offense and defense line.

The Patriots, (2-3-2) league, continued to show depth in their ground ball and communication skills.

“I think we gave our team a tie by having strong defense,” said Germantown Academy junior midfielder Claire McMichael. “Even though we had a lot of good opportunities, we just need to work on capitalizing.”

“We had a couple rough games in the beginning,” said AIS junior captain center/midfielder Lauren DeRose.

“I think we really work as a team. We never give up. We try as hard as we can.”

Much of the first quarter was scoreless in this crucial match. The Owls kept on fighting offensively and DeRose managed to find the net with 4:30 left in the period. Caroline Chisholm provided the assist, and her team held a 1-0 surplus.

The Patriots continued offensively to get some action by the Owls net. Then it happened. McMichael registered a goal to tie the game with 7:49 remaining in the opening half. The remainder of the half as well as the third and fourth quarters were all about defense with no additional scoring by either team and so it was time for overtime.

“Our team found some great passing patterns and we were able to force an offensive corner,” said Agnes Irwin head coach Morgan Paese.

“In the second half, we started to move the ball really well,” said Germantown Academy head coach Jackie Connard. “We had opportunities; we just couldn’t capitalize.”

AIS and GA both had a few close calls with delivering a game-winning goal. However, the ball just did not make it into other net and after ten minutes of play, the game went down in the books as a tie.

“It was a great overtime battle for both teams,” said Paese.

Both sides of defense were on point throughout the game only giving up one goal apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Madison DeStefano stopped four shots for the Patriots. The Owls’ defense was a steady force with freshman goalkeeper Sarah Davis also making four saves on the afternoon.

“I think my defense played a great game against a tough offense and with their big balls and I think they really showed what they can do,” said Davis.

Agnes Irwin School and Germantown Academy will face each other again on Tuesday, October 26 with GA hosting. Game time is 3:30 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to playing GA again next week,” said DeRose.
