This was supposed to be another typically tight Inter-Ac girls’ lacrosse game between two of the four expected title contenders.

In the first meeting on April 5, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy opened the Inter-Ac season with a 12-9 win over Penn Charter.

A little more than three weeks later, on Thursday, the rematch turned into one of the surprising scores of the season.

Penn Charter 17, SCH 3.

The host Quakers picked an opportune time to play their best game of the season. This one was over at halftime with the Quakers leading 12-0.

“By far, this is the best complete game (of the season) I would say,” said Penn Charter coach Colleen Magarity Kelly. “Our second half wasn’t as strong as our first half; you knew they weren’t going to give up and were going to come on strong.”

That said, the Quakers began the game simply on fire and never let up.

“It was the best way we have come out of the gates so far this season,” Magarity Kelly said. “I’ve always told them when they are all playing together and are in sync, we are unstoppable and they did that today.”

Maddie Shoup, a Colorado commit, had five goals, two assists, two ground balls, one draw control and three caused turnovers.

Bea Buckley added four goals, three assists and two draw controls.

Darcy Felter contributed two goals, four assists and four draw controls.

Penn Charter got off to a difficult start during its Inter-Ac schedule. Besides the loss to SCH, the Quakers then fell in their second Inter-Ac game, 11-10 to Episcopal Academy.

Since then, the Quakers have won eight in a row, including five in the Inter-Ac.

“This win boosted our spirit,” said Felter, a North Carolina commit. “We were really down the first time; we had a week where we lost to them and to Episcopal.”

That seems so long ago.

“We were able to bounce back, we have Episcopal next week,” Felter said.

The Quakers visit Episcopal Academy on Tuesday, May 3 in another battle of Inter-Ac contenders.

“We want this so bad,” Felter said. “We have a big group of seniors who have been with us four or five years now so it would be awesome to get that title this year.”

SCH is 10-3, 5-3 and the Blue Devils have wins over Inter-Ac contenders Penn Charter and Episcopal Academy.

In short, this is a quality team that simply had an off-game.

“Today it just wasn’t our day,” said SCH coach Noelle Cebron-Powell. “We’ll come back.”

Cebron-Powell is already looking ahead. There is a chance to that these two could meet again in the Inter-Ac playoffs where the top four teams will compete.

“We’re excited at the chance to see them again,” Cebron-Powell said. “I think the top four in the Inter-Ac are all very strong teams and it’s who has the hot hand on any given day.”

On Thursday Penn Charter had the hot hand and the Quakers are hitting their stride in the stretch run.
