PHILADELPHIA - The best of the best return to the limelight.

The Pennsylvania Sports Writers committee announced its all-state girls’ basketball team. Not surprisingly, numerous local standouts adorned the long list.

Though one could never agree on every chosen (and not chosen) nominee, there is no debate that each of the following players and three coaches deserve their distinct recognition.

Class 6A:

Coach of the Year – Renie Shields, Archbishop Carroll: Citing the “fortune of coaching great girls with an awesome staff,” the longtime mentor’s steady guidance took the Patriots from early struggles to celebrated triumph, punctuated by the PIAA Class 6A state title.

“Coach Renie is the best person to have as your coach,” said standout junior Brooke Wilson. “Not only does she teach us everything we need to know on the court, but she provides us with the skills and resources we need to be great people off the court. She makes us better people.

“The lessons I’ve learned from Coach Renie are so valuable and ones I’ll carry with throughout my life. She is always looking for ways to help you improve your game, whether that’s staying after practice and shooting or pulling you aside in practice and telling you what you did wrong. Anyone that has been coached by Coach Renie is so lucky.”

Second Team:

Brooke Wilson, Archbishop Carroll, 5-9, Junior: The Army-signed guard averaged 11.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while pacing the Patriots to the PIAA Class 6A title.

Taylor Wilson, Archbishop Carroll, 6-0, Senior: Contributed 14.8 points and 4.6 rebounds while leading Patriots to Class 6A state title. Will attend Army next season.

“Taylor and Brooke are an example of what hard work, combined with focus and dedication, looks like,” said Carroll coach Renie Shields. “They persevered and did not waiver when the team was challenged this season with some tough losses. To see those efforts pay off, finishing the season as state champions and as top players in the state, is a testament to their commitment.”

Molly Rullo, Cardinal O'Hara, 6-0, Sophomore: Averaged 16.8 points and 6.5 rebounds and led Lions to semifinal appearances in both the Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) and PIAA state tournament.

“I know I’m getting 110% from Molly every day, both offensively and defensively,” said O’Hara coach Chrissie Doogan. “The thing that impressed me the most this year was Molly’s leadership. She was able to lead an inexperienced team to 23 wins and a state semifinal. She is unselfish and a great role model to our younger players.”

Class 5A:

Co-Coach of the Year – Mike McDonald, Archbishop Wood: Guided the Vikings to their third straight state title and his fifth as head coach. Also corralled this individual honor in 2016, 2017, and 2021.

“I am very grateful,” said McDonald. “I have had great players and a great staffs. My assistant, Wendy Young, deserved much credit this season for all the time she sacrificed to break down video and help our girls have a positive experience. I always look at the COY award as an ultimate team award. It shows how well the team bought in and played well together. It means a lot to our staff and we are proud of our team for it.”

Wood senior Kara Meredith, who played the best ball of her career during the postseason and next year begins at Holy Family University, credited McDonald for much of her growth as a player and person.

“When I first started playing high school basketball, I was a completely different player than I am now,” said Meredith. “I have Coach Mike to thank for that. He has pushed all of us to be the best that we can be, and has been dedicated to every single one of us throughout the four years I have been playing at Wood.

“He has led us to three state championships in a row and put in so much extra time and effort into the team. Whether it’s off-season workouts, team meals, or everyday practices, Coach Mike is always there. I am so lucky to have been able to learn and grow with him as my coach, and I definitely would not have the opportunities I received these four years without his coaching.”

First Team:

Deja Evans, Archbishop Wood, 6-2, Senior: Albany University inherits a player who scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in PIAA final, one year after snaring a record 20 rebounds in the 2022 match. Contributed a stunning nine double-doubles in 10 state games over past two seasons.

“The day she signed her NLI (national letter of intent), she went right down to the gym to work out,” said Wood coach Mike McDonald. “Young Deja just needed people to believe in her greatness, and her coaches at Wood were happy to oblige. Now, Deja knows her greatness and the sky is the limit. She is a well-deserved first-team all-state player and the state Player of the Year in my opinion, due to her performance against our strength of schedule.”

Second Team:

Ava Renninger, Archbishop Wood, 5-6, Junior: Tallied 21 points on blistering 9-of-11 shooting in the state final.

“Ava came to us with a 15-point average as a freshman, and she adjusted to a higher level of competition by putting in more work than everyone else,” said Wood coach Mike McDonald. “Now in her junior season, she earns well-deserved all-state honors after stepping up with great performances in the state tournament run. An awesome performance in the PCL Championship loss in front of 10,000 people was outdone by an even better performance in the state championship game versus the Max Prep’s number one team in the state. She is a gamer and a leader that is going to make a college coach really happy soon.”

CLASS 4A:

Coach of the Year – Eric Gidney, Lansdale Catholic: Spearheaded the school’s first-ever PCL and PIAA state championships.

“Coach Gidney has always pushed me to be a better person on and off the court,” said Lansdale Catholic Player of the Year Gabby Casey. “He has had a big impact on the person and player I have become, and I am forever grateful for him. His perseverance and commitment to the team demonstrates his ultimate desire of wanting what’s best for the LC family and its community.”

Player of the Year:

Gabby Casey, Lansdale Catholic, 5-10, Senior: Two-time first-team all-state selection, winner of virtually every major award in Pennsylvania, and LC’s all-time leading scorer with 1,724 points will play at St. Joseph’s University. Her 21.5 points, 8.4 rebounds, 4.1 steals, and 3.4 assists per game catapulted the Crusaders to their first-ever PCL title and first-ever PIAA crown.

“Playing with her elevated my game, and that’s what great players do,” said teammate Jaida Helm. “Lansdale Catholic will forever be associated with Gabby Casey. She’s a legend.”

Second Team:

Kendall Bennett, Germantown Academy, 6-3, Senior: The first-team All-Inter-Academic League selection who averaged 12 points, eight rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game will play at Binghamton University.

“Kendall is a dominant presence in the paint both on offense and defense,” said legendary Patriots coach Sherri Retif. “As a three-year starter, she contributed immensely to the success of the GA program, and I’m sure she will make an impact at Binghamton.”

Third Team:

Carryn Easley, Neumann-Goretti, 5-4, Sophomore: The first-team All-Catholic averaged 13.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2 steals.

Amya Scott, Neumann-Goretti, 5-4, Sophomore: En route to first-team All-Catholic selection, led team in scoring at a 15.7-point clip. Added 4.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.8 steals.

“It’s well deserved by both Carryn and Amya achieving this as sophomores,” said Saints coach Andrea Peterson. “These two young ladies work hard and know what it takes to be great. They continue to get better every year. They will continue to be the talk of the state for the next two years.”

Jaida Helm, Lansdale Catholic, 5-10, Senior: In her first and only season at LC, stockpiled 12 points, 7.7 rebounds, and aggressive, fearless defense that helped push Crusaders to their first-ever PCL championship and first-ever PIAA title.

“Honestly, Jaida was the best player for us,” said LC Player of the Year Gabby Casey. “She fit right in with our system and was able to contribute right away. We most definitely would not have had as much success as we did without her. She even added aspects to the team that we never had before; for example, her energy and how she is willing to put her body on the line to take charges.”

CLASS 3A:

First Team:

Aleah Snead, Penn Charter, 5-11, Senior: The Inter-Academic League Most Valuable Player will attend St. Joseph’s University next year after contributing 16.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 3.1 steals to a Quakers squad that became the first undefeated league champ in school history.

“Last year we won the Inter-Ac, but we went 11-1 and that one loss was a bad one,” said Snead. “We didn’t play well and knew we were better than that. So we took that to heart this year and set a goal to be 12-0 because realistically none of the teams could beat us if we played the right way.”

Penn Charter coach Joe Maguire lauded Snead, third-team, all-state selection Bella Toomey (more on her below), first-team All-Inter-Ac sophomore Kaylinn Bethea, second-team All-Inter-Ac eighth grader Ryan Carter, and Inter-Ac Special Recognition senior Kelsey Bess for positively reflecting a Quakers program that has dominated the league with a 40-4 record over the past four seasons.

“Those are the things as a coach I hope I never take for granted,” said Maguire. “All of those things are very hard to accomplish and take a lot of time, effort, and dedication from many people. I feel fortunate that I can be a part of something like this at Penn Charter.”

Zahra King, Westtown, 5-10, Junior: Averaged 13.3 points, 3.1

rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.5 steals while shooting 52 percent from the field, 82 percent from the line, and 35 percent from long distance while leading Moose to a second straight PAISAA title.

Second Team:

Savannah Curry, Westtown, 5-10, Junior: Averaged 9.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.3 steals, helping Moose secure a second straight PAISAA crown.

Logyn Greer, Friends’ Central, 6-3, Sophomore: Averaged 15.2 points and 8.6 points for the Phoenix, and was named first-team All-Friends Schools League.

Grace Sundback, Westtown, Senior: Delaware University-bound stalwart averaged 13.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.5 steals for two-time-straight PAISAA winners.

Third Team:

Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick, Westtown, 5-11, Senior: Will be playing at Seton Hall University after her 7 points, 4 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1 steal per game aided the Moose in capturing two straight PAISAA championships.

Bella Toomey, Penn Charter, 6-0, Senior: Headed to Fairleigh Dickinson after contributing 10.6 points. 7.2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game for a Quakers team that finished a perfect 12-0 in the Inter-Academic League.

The award serves as just another reminder of a superb season.

“It means a lot to us as a team and also as friends,” said Toomey. “Even once basketball is over, our relationships with each other will stay, and so to know that I have these friends for life is the best thing about it all.

“We have gone through a lot together these past four years, so I think especially for us seniors and Coach Joe (Maguire), it just feels like an amazing accomplishment that we will get to look back on in 10 years and many years after that. I am so proud of what we have done.
