RADNOR, PA – Archbishop Carroll senior midfielder Olivia Stout was a second team All-Philadelphia Catholic League selection last season as a junior, and among the leading players this season as a senior. She has been a four-year varsity player and has helped the Patriots become among the most improved teams this season. She is a standout as a defender and in helping the attack, with poise on the ball and a high soccer IQ to make the right decisions. This season she has already scored 10 goals.

“Olivia Stout is a really good player,” said veteran Archbishop Carrol coach Tom Quintois. “She creates a lot of shots, is a very hard worker, very skillful on the ball and has really good vision.”

Of course, that vision has helped her off the field as well, for as exemplary as her soccer career has been, there is somewhere she is even more accomplished – in the classroom.

Throughout her career at Archbishop Carroll, Stout has earned straight A’s. She is a member of the National Honor Society and ranked among the top 10 in her class.

And what makes it more impressive is that she is taking among the most challenging courses.

Here is a look at her senior year classes – Advanced Placement chemistry and AP human geography, theology and calculus. In addition, she is in the fourth year of taking an engineering course.

She says AP chemistry is her toughest class.

“It is hard because we have to go so fast,” she said. “We learn a chapter every week and have a test every Friday.”

One of her biggest challenges is juggling academics with playing soccer.

“I try to get a lot of homework done in school so when I get home, I can usually spend about an hour studying every night,” she said. “I try to keep up with my work as much as I can.”

While one understands the pressure comes in playing a sport, imagine trying to keep up her straight-A streak intact.

“There is a lot of pressure, but I kind of learned through the years how to do it,” she said.

With all the challenges of her classes, soccer, she says, has been a nice diversion.

Stout is enjoying her senior year, where Carroll will be a major contender to earn one of the six PCL playoff berths.

“I’m excited because I feel we have a chance to do well in the playoffs,” she said. “It should be exciting.”

Nail-biter for Archbishop Ryan

Archbishop Ryan remained the lone team unbeaten in PCL play when the Ragdolls defeated visiting Archbishop Wood, 2-1 in overtime in a Thursday night thriller.

Senior Gianna Rivera, who has scored as many clutch goals as anybody in the PCL this season, provided both scores in the winning effort. Rivera, who is a Kutztown commit, scored the game-winner in Ryan’s opening 3-2 PCL win over Nazareth and has been slicing up defenses ever since.

On the other end of it, holding the Wood offense to one goal took some doing.

“Our defense played great,” Archbishop Ryan coach Megan Manion said.

Among the defensive standouts were Carlie Nigro and Paige Fienman.

One reason for Ryan’s success this year has been an ability to win the close games.

Three of the five PCL victories were one-goal games.

Freshman keeper stars for St. Hubert

Quin Miller has been playing goal since she was five years old. In a 1-1 tie at Conwell-Egan, Miller looked like a player who has been playing the position her entire soccer career.

Miller made one big stop after another to keep the Bambies in the game in gaining a hard-earned tie.

“We had a lot of chances, but that goalkeeper, that was the first time I saw her in the net, and she did a phenomenal job,” Conwell-Egan coach Andy Adamiec said. “I can’t believe some of the saves she made, so I have to give kudos to her.”

The game was played in cold damp conditions and Miller said the elements worried her more than the pressure of playing in such a tight game and being the last line of defense.

“It’s not the pressure that scares me, in this type of game it is the rain,” Miller said. “There is a lot of pressure, but I also try to keep calm.”

That was surely the case.

Miller says that when she makes a big save, she can feel how much it picks up the team.

“It picks thing up a lot because everybody is screaming, and it makes everybody so happy.”

Everybody, but the opponent.

Both goals were scored in the first half.

Freshman Saige Primavera of St. Hubert opened the scoring, but Conwell-Egan’s Gianna Vorgity got the equalizer on a shot from close range.

The two teams then battled through the second half and two overtimes.

Anytime it appeared Conwell-Egan would have a good chance, Miller was there to thwart things.

St. Hubert followed that effort with a 2-0 victory over Little Flower. Primavera scored both goals in the win.

The lone senior for Conwell-Egan

Conwell-Egan defender Connie Wojton has been the only senior to play this year for the Eagles, although there has to be an asterisk.

Classmate Mia Aizen is also on the roster but has yet to play. She is coming off an ACL injury and coach Andy Adamiec says there is a possibility she could return if the Eagles reach the playoffs.

Either way, this is a young Conwell-Egan team and Wojton says it’s been an interesting experience being the elder stateswoman.

“It’s definitely crazy,” she said. “Being the only senior, I feel really old, but everybody is pulling their weight, everybody is doing great and I feel like I’m not the only senior on the field, everybody is helping me out and I love it even with such a young team.”

As the lone senior, she has taken it upon herself to provide more leadership to a young but talented group.

“I am always talking, always trying to help everyone moving,” she said. “It is definitely a big role, but everybody here helps me so much.”

Wojton has two sisters who are six and eight years older than she is and both played at Conwell-Egan, so she has been following the program a long time.

“I loved watching them play, I’m like a mixture of both of them on the field and I love it,” she said.

Two OT games for Archbishop Wood

During the past week, Archbishop Wood played in two overtime games.

On Monday, Archbishop Wood defeated Lansdale Catholic, 1-0 in overtime at the Ukrainian Nationals Soccer Club in Horsham.

The game-winner came on an own goal following a cross by Regan Kelso, a junior transfer from Pennsbury.

This was a rematch of last year’s PCL championship game.

In a rematch of the 2021 game, Wood then suffered a 2-1 OT loss to Archbishop Ryan.

Mia Casey was the goal scorer for the Vikings.

Archbishop Wood has played six Catholic League games this season and four have been decided by one goal.

Another one-goal game for Cardinal O’Hara

Cardinal O’Hara kept its streak of playing one-goal PCL games alive with Thursday’s 1-0 win at Archbishop Carroll.

Carly Coleman, who has scored so many big goals, added another one to the list. Keeper Ava Hinelski made eight saves, while Archbishop Carroll goalie Grace Wilson added four saves.

“It was a true squad performance,” Cardinal O’Hara coach Dave Cornish said. “The defense and goalkeeper won key battles and the midfield worked tirelessly all game. The strikers helped keep the ball and relieve pressure.”

As for the one-goal games, both losses were by 1-0 scores, while the other PCL win was a 2-1 OT triumph over Conwell-Egan.

Rebound win for Lansdale Catholic

Lansdale Catholic rebounded from the above-mentioned 1-0 OT loss to Archbishop Wood to defeat Conwell-Egan, 3-1. In between was a 2-1 OT non-league win over Mount St. Joseph.

Trailing 1-0 against Conwell-Egan, Mia Norbury scored the equalizer. Carolyn Moore’s header off a Kate Norbury cross into the box was the OT game-winner for the Crusaders.

“With the effort we put in against Wood and a win against Mount, everybody was feeling good (entering the Conwell-Egan game),” Lansdale Catholic coach Nyki Beuke said.

What made the Conwell-Egan game more impressive is that Lansdale Catholic had to overcome a 1-0 deficit.

Freshman Mattie Williams tied the score on a ball drilled to the upper far side.

“After that goal, the momentum shifted into our favor,” Beuke said.

The Crusaders took the lead on Kate Norbury’s free kick, the first goal of her high school career.

The Crusaders got an insurance goal late in the game when Molly Norbury converted a corner kick from her sister Kate.

“It’s nice to have a good win under our belt and it was a big week for the Norbury sisters, scoring goals in games this week,” Beuke said. “There’s still a lot of soccer to be played and we’re going to be bringing our A game every time.”

Two More W’s for Nazareth Academy

Nazareth concluded a 2-0 week with a 10-0 win over Bonner & Prendie. The more competitive game was a 5-0 victory over Little Flower in which Nazareth Academy led just 1-0 at the half before taking over in the final 40 minutes.

Alanna Scancella led the way with two goals. Scoring single goals were Reese Power, Grace Retneller and Abby Rock.
