Marple Newtown - PA.  Before the Marple Newtown Tigers hit the field last night for their home opener against the Penn Wood Patriots, they took a moment like so many of us on this date to remember 9/11.  During a pre-game ceremony, members of the Marple Newtown Football Alumni Association presented a special commemorative 9/11 pin to newly appointed district superintendent, Dr. Carol Cary and to high school assistant principal and military veteran, Donald Tabor.

Jim Allsman, who has been the voice of the Tigers Radio Network since 2005, said the idea to present the pins came after seeing a tweet from political commentator and nationally syndicated radio host Michael Smerconish. “I wanted the people and the players to know that before the start of this game we understand the magnitude and history of 9/11,” said Allsman.  Smerconish, who partnered with Philadelphia jeweler Steven Singer who produces the pins, promoted the memorial pinning through his social media platforms.

Allsman, along with the Marple Newtown Tigers’ football alumni association, also purchased thirty pins for their coaches to wear. “They are performing their duties as coaches tonight but they are also honoring this anniversary,”said Allsman.

The pins were purchased for $10 each. All proceeds from the sales of the pins benefit the 9/11 Garden of Reflection Memorial in Lower Makefield, PA.  More than $50 thousand has been raised for the garden.

The Tigers defeated the Patriots 22-14.
