Ambler, Pa. - The Temple Men’s soccer team defeated the Yale Bulldogs 2-0 Sunday afternoon behind two Jorge Gomez- Sanchez first half goals.

With the victory the Owls remained undefeated  and improve to 4-0-1, doubling their win total from last season. The Yale Bulldogs remain winless on the campaign dropping to 0-4-0.

Gomez Sanchez grabbed his first netter in the 30th minute of the match. Matt Mahoney had a beautiful look to find Gomez Sanchez in the box. Gomez  Sanchez  fired the ball into the back of the net and the Owls took the 1-0 lead.

Gomez Sanchez added his second goal of the afternoon in the 42nd minute. After receiving a pass from Jordan Wix-Rauch, Gomez Sanchez took on three defensemen on his own. He moved around toward the left, fired a shot, which landed in the back of the net after deflecting off of a Bulldog and into the net.

“I received the ball, and I drew defenders, I shot it and there was a defender who tried to kick it out, but he kicked it to the goal,” said Gomez Sanchez on his second goal after the game.  “I want to dedicate this goal to my grandmother that passed away two years ago. This is for her.”

“It means a lot [to have him]. We didn’t score many goals last year, and I think it just gives everybody a lot of confidence now,” said Temple Head Coach David MacWilliams on Gomez Sanchez.

The Owls and Bulldogs both struggled in the more physical second half. By the end of the match Yale ended up with three yellow cards and over twenty fouls. Temple exceeded ten fouls and one Owl, Jared Martinelli, ended up carded.

“They tackle hard but I think soccer is a contact game and we have to keep with that,” said Gomez Sanchez on the Yale physicality and fouls.

Alex Cagle grabbed his third shutout of the season behind stellar defense by his teammates. The Owls only allowed Yale a single shot on goal the entire afternoon.

“We’ve gone down in games 1-0 and comeback but that’s a credit to the defense. We don’t give up a lot of chances, and when we have, Cagle has come up big. Overall I’m real pleased, MacWilliams stated.

“I think the guys enjoy one another, they like playing for one another and it’s a good group,” said MacWilliams on his team.

The Temple Owls stay local this week, traveling to Villanova Wednesday followed by a game against the Penn Quakers next Sunday. The Owls return to Ambler on September 23 with a game against the LaSalle Explorers set to kickoff at 3pm.
