It was an Inter-Ac showdown, with the Fords coming out on top 41-40.

HAVERFORD, PA – The Haverford Fords add another win to their unblemished 2015 record. This afternoon, the Fords opened up Inter-Ac League play at home vs. Penn Charter.

First scoring TD drive by Haverford

The Penn Charter Quakers entered the game strong, recording a safety, putting them up 2-0 with 6:34 left in the first quarter. Four minutes later, junior quarterback Michael Hnatkowsky, threw a touch down pass to make the score 9-0. During the following kick-off, Penn Charter recovered a Fords’ fumble and drove down the field to score another touchdown putting the team up 16-0.

Haverford answered before the half with a rushing touchdown, scored by quarterback Tommy Toal, to put them on the board 7-0. But, the Quakers were not finished quite yet and scored a field goal to extend their lead 19-7 going into halftime.

At the start of the second half, Haverford came out looking like a whole different team on the offensive side of the ball. The Fords drove right down the field for a touchdown cutting the Quakers lead to 19 -14.

Haverford’s head coach, Michael Murphy, stated that Penn Charter’s defense stunned his team in the first half, taking them out of their element.

“In the first half they (Penn Charter) did a tremendous job taking us out of what we do. We never really had the football at all, except in a few hurry-up situations,” said Murphy. “We never got a chance to establish our offense and I felt like coming out in the second half starting with the ball and getting that opportunity was big for us.”

After a big play by Ford’s wide receiver Dox Aitken, Toal scored on a quarterback draw putting them up 20-19. Despite missing a 2pt. conversion, this was Haverford’s first lead of the game.

On the ensuing Penn Charter drive, Ford’s senior defensive back Mica Sims picked off Hnatkowsky and took it to the house for the touchdown making the score with 9 minutes left in the fourth. After adding the extra point, Haverford’s lead stretched 27-19.

Penn Charter responded on the next drive, scoring a touchdown and adding on the 2-pt. conversion to tie the game 27-27.

The score remained tied at the end of the fourth quarter, resulting in overtime.

Penn Charter won the toss, and proceeded to score on their first possession bringing the score to 34-27.  With the game on the line, Haverford scored on their possession and added the extra point to once again tie the game at 34-34. After a goal line stand and a blocked field goal on the next two drives for each team, the game came down to the final two possessions.  Penn Charter scored on a pass that was deflected by Haverford’s defense, right into the hands of Evan Ferrell. After a blocked extra point the score was 40-34.  The Fords answered back with a touchdown on their drive to tie the game at 40-40.  An extra point was all that was needed to win the game and Haverford delivered.

The players stormed the field after a hard fought game by both teams. The Fords remain undefeated and start 1-0 in Inter-Ac League play.

After the game, Murphy told his team to never take a win for granted, especially when playing Inter-Ac teams.

“The best thing that people don’t understand about our league, is that you have six non-league football games where everybody’s watching you and learning you and then all of a sudden, it’s a playoff game every week,” said Murphy. “I’m biased, but I think that our Inter-Ac coaching is some of the best in the area, everyone you face will be prepared.”
