NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA – In the battle for Northeast Philadelphia supremacy, St. Hubert’s came out on top against Archbishop Ryan by a score of 51-46 in a physical matchup that saw more than 10 personal fouls in the first quarter.

“It was really intense, and although we didn’t get the win it was still a fun game going against them,” senior forward Sarah Ostaszewski said.

Ostaszewski, the oldest of three sisters on the Ragdoll team, is one of four seniors who played their last basketball game against their Northeast rival. For Ostaszewski, the rivalry will continue on to the spring season, with hopes of winning a third consecutive PCL softball championship against the Bambies.

“Now that I’m done playing them (St. Hubert’s) in basketball I get to look forward to playing them in softball, and I think we’ll beat them,” Ostaszewski said.

The gymnasium on Torresdale Ave. was filled to capacity for the annual rivalry game, which also included some former Ryan players like Samantha Hicks, Devin Jones, and Shayna Rodriquez.

“It was tough to watch the seniors lose to St. Hubert’s,” Hicks said. “Especially after how happy we were when beat them by 20 points; it was really frustrating to watch them struggle.”

Growing up in Mayfair, senior guard Ashley Smink has played against the girls on St. Hubert’s team her whole life.

“It wasn’t different for me playing against them since I grew up with them, it actually tended to make things easier,” Smink said. “I knew their tendencies and what they were capable of doing on the floor.”

Senior forward, and Chestnut Hill commit, Shannon Glenn led the team with 16 points. Glenn and the rest of the Ragdolls are looking past the loss and on to the rest of the season.

“I definitely need to step up for the team offensively with my shooting and defensively with my communication,” Glenn said. ”We just need to get back to playing like a team, making extra passes, talking on defense, really playing for each other. I feel like we’re slacking on that now but once we figure it out we will play awesome together.”

It’s a quick turnaround for Archbishop Ryan who will be playing in New York tonight, before getting back into Catholic League action on Tuesday at home against Archbishop Carroll at 7PM. The Bambies will also continue league play on Tuesday playing Bonner-Prendie away at 7PM.
