NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA- In a very narrow victory, it was Penn Charter who snagged the win off of Episcopal Academy Friday night.

In the beginning of the game, the Quakers lacked energy; shots were low, layups were missed or denied by the impressive Churchwomen’s defense. At the end of the first quarter, Episcopal held an impressive 24-8 lead.

However, the Lady Quakers stepped up their game in the second quarter. The score line showed a dramatic 29-22 lead in favor of EA. The Churchwomen seemed to be playing the "three game," firing from outside the arc often, yet not capitalizing. This would come back to haunt them when the final score was decided.

With 30 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, Penn Charter pulled out in front, with the quarter ending 37-34 in favor of the Quakers. PC senior Hannah Fox (21 points) and her team dribbled out the remaining quarter, picking up the close win on the road, 49-46.

Penn Charter's head basketball coach Joe Maguire said that after a poor first quarter, he told the girls to remember their practices.

"We knew that if we played defense, it would lead to our offense. We started out a little, I don't know if scared is the word, a little nervous, there was kind of some uncharacteristic mistakes with turning the ball over, they hit some shots, they came out really good, and every game we've seen of them, we knew that if we played good defense we'd be alright.”

"We stopped scoring,” said Episcopal’s head coach Chuck Simmonds. “We got into a run of some bad possessions, and we just have to recognize that defensively, we have to play together.”

“They made some shots, and we didn't rebound the ball well, so we gave them extra opportunities which hurt us and we never got the momentum back,” said Simmons.

"We switched into a different defense,” said EA’s Katie Weaver. “I just think that we didn't communicate that well on defense, and we just didn't play that hard. I just think that they wanted it a little more than us."

Penn Charter (10-5 overall, 2-1 Inter-Ac) plays again tomorrow against Agnes Irwin at home.

Episcopal Academy (5-5 overall, 0-3 Inter-Ac) face Baldwin School on their home court tomorrow as well.
