PHILADELPHIA, PA- The Penn Charter girls’ basketball team dominated their home court Friday afternoon in a match-up against Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.
The Quakers (12-4 overall, 4-1 Inter-Ac) beat SCH (3-3 overall, 5-7 Inter-Ac) 59-38.
PC’s press was right on from the start of the game scoring 14 points to SCH’s 6 in the first quarter.
The Quakers’ intensity did not stop there; scoring 17 points in the second quarter and 19 points in the third.
“Our press is really good when we play it with intensity and move our feet and not reach,” said Penn Charter’s head coach Joe Maguire. “When we keep people in front of us and pressure the ball, it makes it hard on our opponent to get the ball up the court. We also did a nice job of anticipating the next pass and stealing the ball. Leading to easy baskets.”
Penn Charter standout Hannah Fox had 19 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds for the Quakers.
Teammate Ayanna Matthews had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals before the fourth quarter began.
“Ayanna and Hannah are very good at scoring at all 3 levels, from 3, mid-range, and driving to the basket. This makes them very difficult to guard. They can beat you in many different ways,” said Maguire.
PC’s Mireyah Davis scored 6 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks adding to PC’s scoring power and squad momentum.
“They all are buying into our offense and letting shots come to them in the flow of it, instead of forcing bad shots. When no one cares who gets the credit, we play really good as team,” said Maguire.
Despite the loss, SCH’s squad played a hard-fought game against the Quakers and maintained their tenacity answering back 18 points to PC’s 9 in the fourth quarter.
“We have great kids that have individual abilities and a desire to win,” said SCH’s head coach Matt Paul.
“As long as we keep coming together, we’ll be fine. I am super excited about where we are and where we are going,”
