VILLANOVA GETS REVENGE ON PROVIDENCE

After falling to Providence in overtime during their first meeting of the year, you have to believe Villanova had this date marked in red on their calendar.

As always, Villanova was able to take care of business, holding off a late Friars run to take this one 72-60. A lot of credit for the win has to go to Josh Hart on the defensive end, who followed Kris Dunn the whole game and held him to 11 points.

Darryl Reynolds came up big with a double-double, leading the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Reynolds was actually one of three Villanova players to have double-double, Kris Jenkins (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Josh Hart (14 points, 13 rebounds) also contributed a double-double to the cause. The Wildcats seemed to be faring just fine without leading rebounder Daniel Ochefu, dominating the boards 46-29. Villanova clamped down on Providence in a big way, holding the Friars to 33% shooting for the game.

Villanova now has won 13 of their last 14 games and they still sit alone atop of the Big East. The Wildcats will head to DePaul on Tuesday. The game starts at 8:30 PM and can be seen on Fox Sports 1.

PENN TAKES CARE OF HARVARD

Penn and Harvard were step for step for the majority of the game with Harvard pulling out every stop possible to stay in it despite poor shooting. Penn finally broke Harvard’s back, continuously pounding the paint, which paved the way to a 67-57 victory.

With the win, Penn moves up to 4th place in the Ivy League, trailing Yale, Princeton, and Columbia. Penn’s big man Darien Nelson-Henry was too much for Harvard, posting a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. The dominance inside did not stop there, Matt Howard (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Max Rothschild (14 points, 11 rebounds), off the bench, also had double-doubles in the game.

The Quakers absolutely owned the paint, pulling down 53 rebounds (15 offensive), which more than doubled Harvard’s rebound total. Penn’s defense definitely deserves a lot of credit because they held The Crimson to a miniscule 30% shooting. It was basically grown men versus little boys in this one.

Penn will take its two-game winning streak to Columbia, who is 5-1 in the conference, this Friday at 7 PM. A win of this magnitude for the Quakers could help propel toward the top of the conference with a couple easy games coming after this one

PENN HOLD OFF DARTMOUTH

This game came down to the wire with Penn trailing by as much as eight, but the tides turned when Jake Slipe completed a three-point play with just over a minute to go to give Penn the lead for good.

The 71-64 for Penn snapped a season-high four-game losing streak and they now sit in 5th place in the Ivy League. Penn’s leading scorer, Darien Nelson-Henry had big game leading the way with 19 points (8/10 from the floor) and stuffed the stat sheet with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Joining Nelson-Henry in double-figures, were Jake Slipe (13 points, 8 assists, 5 steals) and Jackson Donahue (13 points).

Penn almost shot 50% as a team and they were able to make eight three-pointers as did Dartmouth. Both teams were extremely careless with the ball, turning it over a combined 41 times and each team turned those turnovers into 20+ points. One of the reasons why Penn won is because they dominated the paint the whole game and Dartmouth didn’t have the manpower to counter.

TEMPLE'S COACH FRAN DUNPHY GETS HISTORIC WIN OVER UCF

This was a huge game not just for Temple, but also for coach Fran Dunphy, who could become the winningest coach in Big 5 history surpassing his predecessor John Chaney. Temple barely held on in this one, almost allowing the game to go into overtime, but the shot didn’t count, giving Temple a 62-60 win and Coach Dunphy win no. 517.

With Jaylen Bond in foul trouble, Mark Williams saw his playing time increased and he answered the call with 16 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Obi Enechionyia continues to put up consistent numbers after having a rough couple game stretch and he proves to be one of the differences between a win and a loss for the Owls. Quenton DeCosey struggled from the field, but had a respectful 15 points and made some clutch free throws down the stretch.

As for Coach Fran Dunphy, he now is the winningest coach in Big 5 history with 517 wins, but you can be sure he wasn’t even thinking about it during the game.

Temple now sits theoretically atop of the American Conference since SMU doesn’t really count with the violations. The Owls are still alive for the NCAA Tournament, but it’s pretty much win or bust from here on. Temple returns home on Thursday to face UConn, who Temple beat on the road. Game starts at 7p.m. on ESPN 2.

ST. JOE'S WRECKS FORDHAM

After losing to Saint Bonaventure, the Hawks took their anger out on Fordham, crushing the Rams by a score of 82-60. Saint Joe’s remains one game behind conference leaders VCU and Dayton and they own the nation’s best road record at 8-0.

Point guard Shavar Newkirk was a surprise leading scorer for the Hawks in this game, finishing with a career-high 17 points and Freshman Lamarr Kimble also had a career-high 13 points off the bench. DeAndre Bembry had a nice game posting a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Saint Joe’s shot 50% from the floor and made 11 three’s, making it impossible for Fordham to keep up with them.

Saint Joe’s will be back in action on the road this Wednesday against George Washington at 7 PM on the Comcast Network.

LA SALLE DROPS 8TH STRAIGHT GAME AGAINST RHODE ISLAND

Believe it or not, this game was tied at halftime, but then Rhode Island's Jarvis Garrett took over the game. Garrett had a game-high 28 points to go along with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals, being one of the driving forces leading a 79-62 win for Rhode Island.

Jordan Price’s scoring rate continues to slow down as he only was able to contribute 14 points for the Explorers in the losing effort. Four of La Salle’s starters finished the game in double-double figures, but none of them could deliver the type of performance La Salle desperately needed. Their defense could not stick with the hot shooting of Rhode Island and it didn’t help that the Explorers turned the ball over 18 turnovers, which led to 33 free points for Rhode Island.

La Salle continues the road trip with the next stop being at Davidson on Thursday at 7 PM.

COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON STEAMROLLS DREXEL

Drexel struggled from the start only making eight total field goals the whole game en route to a 60-38 loss. Drexel only had 10 points at halftime and simply could not get into a rhythm all game.

Drexel's Rodney Williams led the team with 8 points. Drexel shot 8 of 34(23.5%) from the floor and only made 16.7% of their shots from beyond the arc. The only thing they did well was get to the free throw line, but those strike points weren’t nearly enough to keep the Dragons in the game. Drexel also turned the ball over 23 times, making it even easier for the College of Charleston to claim victory.
