Second Round:

Villanova Defeats Iowa, Advances To The Sweet 16

Villanova had no problem against Iowa, holding them below 70 points and only allowing the Hawkeyes to makes seven threepointers on 24 attempts. The Wildcats cruised to a 8768 victory and haven’t been challenged yet.

Villanova was able to limit Jarrod Uthoff’s production holding him to 16 points, which is something Temple couldn’t do in the first round. Iowa must have saved all their turnovers for this game because they turned the ball over ten more times than they did against Temple leading to 14 free points for Villanova.

Villanova led a balanced attack with Kris Jenkins, Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Ryan Arcidiacono all in doublefigures with a combined 62 points. The Wildcats are such a tough team to guard because just about everyone can shoot, leading opposing teams to have matchup problems all over the court.

Villanova advances to the Sweet 16 for the first since 2009 when they landed in the final four. The Wildcats will head to Louisville, Kentucky to take number three seeded Miami. The game will take place this upcoming Thursday. Game time and network TBD.

First Round:

Temple’s Season Ends In Heartbreak

Down by three with eight seconds left in the game, senior Quenton DeCosey got to play hero one last time for this Temple team as he went up for a threepointer and got fouled. DeCosey made all three free throws to send the game into overtime, but Iowa survived on a last second put back to win it 7270.

DeCosey, Jaylen Bond, and Josh Brown played their hearts out in this game combining for 56 points and 32 rebounds. The rest of the Temple’s team only tallied 14 points, and sophomore Obi Enechionyia and senior Devin Coleman did not contribute as much as fans would have hoped in the final stretch of the season. The two of them laid an egg in the semifinals of the AAC Tournament and their lack of contribution versus Iowa left the Owls saying goodbye to Brooklyn no sooner than they arrived.

On Iowa’s gamewinning put back, it looked like Adam Woodbury pushed off on Enechionyia to get to the ball, but the refs did not call it in the Owls favor.

Temple had a magical season that many people did not see coming and head coach Fran Dunphy was awarded American Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. 2017 could be a rebuilding year for Temple, with the Owls losing their leading scorer in DeCosey and rebounder in Bond, but anything can happen with Dunphy at the helm on North Broad Street.

Saint Joe’s Survives Against Cincinnati

Saint Joe’s almost fell completely apart in the second half, trailing 7675, but the Hawks got the ball into the hands of A10 player of the year DeAndre Bembry who found Isaiah Miles for the go ahead threepointer.

On the other end, it looked like the Bearcats tied it with a buzzerbeating dunk, but it was one tenth of a second too late and Saint Joe’s escaped.

Arguably one of the best scoring duos in the nation, DeAndre Bembry and Isaiah Miles led the way for Saint Joe’s combining for 42 points and 13 rebounds. Bembry really took over this game and showed why he is one of the best players in the tournament.

Saint Joe’s also received some help from Aaron Brown who added 13 points, making some timely shots. James Demery proved to be a great contributor off the bench giving the Hawks ten points and four rebounds.

Saint Joe’s then faced number one seeded Oregon this past Sunday. Oregon was favored by six and a half points going into the game, which proved to be nearly accurate. The Ducks defeats the Hawks by five, with a final of 69-64, ending St. Joe’s March Madness run.

Villanova Takes Care of UNC Asheville

After playing an uninspired first half where Villanova was nearly sleepwalking, the Wildcats caught fire and quickly put UNC Asheville to bed in the second half. Villanova shot 57% as a team including 13 of 28 from beyond the arc cruising to an 8656 victory over UNC Asheville.

Daniel Ochefu had a great game posting a doubledouble with 17 points and 10 rebounds and led Villanova in scoring. Josh Hart struggled only able to manage nine points on four of ten shooting from the floor, but luckily they didn’t need him.

Kris Jenkins slowed down bit, but had a respectable 12 points and Ryan Arcidiacono added 14 points with 12 of those points coming off of threepointers. Jalen Brunson did not really do much in this one with a 10point performance, but he played solid on defense.
