FORT WASHINGTON, PA – For most high school athletes, scoring their 1,000th or 100th goal in any sport would be groundbreaking. Penn Charter senior, Hannah Fox, can now add both of those achievements to her already impressive resume.
This past basketball season, Fox set a new all-time scoring record in Penn Charter’s history, tallying 1,813 career points. Yesterday, Fox scored her 100th career lacrosse goal while playing away against Germantown Academy (3-3, 1-3).
The goal had been long awaited, as Fox was hoping to score it during last Thursday’s match-up against Notre Dame Academy. However, she was two goals shy. Leading up to yesterday’s match-up, head coach Colleen Magarity tried to keep things as calm as possible during practice in order to ease the pressure off of Fox.
“I didn’t bring it up (in practice), but the girls came to me and brought it up and I told them they couldn’t say anything to her because I didn’t want any pressure to be on her. I wanted it to be a normal game, but I knew she knew that she was close,” said Magarity, a GA grad.
Laughing Magarity added, “She’s going to have plenty more, so this shouldn’t be that big of a deal for her anyway.”
Hannah Fox stands in between GA's Lauren Oeth & Maeve Connor. Oeth and Connor play on GA's basketball and softball teams and consider themselves "Hannah's Biggest Fans!"
The 100th goal was not the only thing the Quakers got to celebrate. Magarity’s squad pulled off a 13-8 victory over GA, adding another win to their undefeated overall and league records.
“The draw was a huge emphasis today. There’s a saying in college that ‘If you win the draw you rule the world.’ So our girls did a really good job of controlling the possessions and defensively they played a great first half,” said Magarity.
At the half, the Quakers led the Patriots 9-2. However, GA came out into the second firing at PC’s goalie Hayley Hunt, scoring four goals in 11 minutes. Despite the second half comeback, the Patriots were unable to capitalize on their home turf and gave up four more PC goals.
“We knew they were a hustling team and we are a hustling team. And we knew that if we weren’t getting center draws or fighting for the balls that we weren’t going to get them and would have to be defensive,” said Patriots head coach Brooke Watson.
Although 1-3 in league play, GA’s season is far from over. The Patriots have nine more league games to play and will have their chance to split with the Quakers on Friday, May 6th. Having only two seniors on the roster, Watson’s team is comprised of young and competitive talent who are learning and refining their skills with each coming game.
“The fire in the belly is our big thing,” said Watson. “ ‘Do you have the fire in your belly? Do you want that ball as much as they do.’ I tell the girl’s ‘one game at a time.’ We more or less remember what went on, flush it and prepare for a new game. We want to lessen our turnovers, we want to fight for the ground balls, we want to run a team offense.”
Looking Ahead: Germantown Academy will travel to Episcopal tomorrow afternoon and Penn Charter will face Baldwin away this Friday. Both games are scheduled to start at 3:30PM.
