BRYN MAWR, PA- The second time proved to be a charm for Baldwin School girls’ lacrosse as they hosted Germantown Academy in a league game Tuesday afternoon.
In reminiscent of the April 8th game when the Bears lost (15-8) to the Patriots, both teams took to the field in earnest but this time is was different; extremely different.
Baldwin was determined not to lose.
“This team is very talented and we’ve been improving each game this season,” said Baldwin head coach Marisa Lozano.
“They knew that is was important to leave it all on the field. They were focused and ready to fight for 50 minutes.”
And fight they did with a one-point lead Germantown Academy (7), Baldwin School (8) going into the second half, the Bears’ defense continued to shine going toe-to-toe to GA’s strong attacks.
“They accepted the challenge of doing whatever it takes to come out on top. That attitude was contagious, so every player on the field was dialed in and ready to play their hardest when called upon,” said Lozano.
According to Lozano, it was key communication among her defenders that kept GA’s key players in check.
“Our transitions were the best we’ve had all season. On the attacking end, our goal was to possess and take care of the ball. We wanted to keep our turnovers minimal and control the game,” said Lozano.
Before the game, Lozano told each player to step up and fulfill the role they play on the field. It was evident that each player took that advice to heart.
Back-to-back goals from each team kept the board lit up throughout the second half.
Baldwin was “pumped up”, said Germantown Academy head coach Brooke Watson. “Any time we scored they answered right back. They also put in a backer-defense which we did not play well against.”
A stellar performance by Baldwin lead scorer sophomore Marissa McGarrey who hit 7 goals and two draw controls on the day along with the help of senior Isabelle Schaeffer with 3 goals and sophomore Myla Barnett also hitting 3, secured the 14-12 victory over the Patriots.

Baldwin senior gatekeeper Shayna Silverman played one of her best games all season with 11 saves against GA’s aggressive offense.
“She made these critical saves in big moments,” explained Lozano.
“Shayna knew that her performance was just as important as our attackers scoring and our midfielders getting the draw.”
“I give Baldwin a lot of credit for their first Inter-Ac victory, it was well deserved,” said Watson.
Deserved indeed.
