ROSEMONT, PA – “The Sensational Six.” It’s the term Agnes Irwin’s head coach Jenny Duckenfield uses to describe her standout seniors. The “Six” are comprised of Hannah Keating (Harvard), Kristin Burnetta (Harvard), Kate White (Dartmouth), Laura Pansini (Princeton), Emily Fryer (Brown) and Sarah Platt (University of Virginia).

“The senior class here have been the strength and core of this team since their freshmen year. They played as freshmen, they started as freshmen, and that’s when the turnaround began,” said Duckenfield.

On Wednesday afternoon, Agnes Irwin took the field to play Baldwin in their last regular season home game. Before the game began, coach Duckenfield, honored both Baldwin’s graduating seniors and her own by bestowing each girl a bouquet of flowers and wishing them the best of luck on their collegiate journey.

Senior Day Ceremony

After the ceremony, coach Duckenfield gave her seniors a specific task.

“Each senior had to score a goal today, and Kristin Burnetta had to score two, one for her and one for Hannah Keating,” said Duckenfield.

Not only did each senior fulfill their task, but one senior in particular went above and beyond her one goal assignment. Laura Pansini scored 6 goals on the afternoon – her fourth goal being her 200th of her career. Pansini totaled nine points on the afternoon (6g, 3a) and set the Agnes Irwin record for career points, totaling 328 (202g, 126a).

In the first half, the Irwin seniors took control. Burnetta, Pansini White, Fryer and Platt each accounted for scoring a total of 11 of the Owls 13 first half goals. AIS junior Lila Barker tallied the other two goals in the first half. Baldwin’s Myla Barnett scored her teams first goal of the afternoon and teammate Izzy Schaeffer added the Bears second with 7:28 left to play.

After the half, Baldwin sophomore Marissa McGarrey added her teams third and fourth goals. On Wednesday May 11th, McGarrey scored her 100th goal vs. the Hill School during the first round of the PAISAA tournament. Although already a powerful force on the field for the Bears, McGarrey stated a few skills she would like to improve upon for next season.

“My personal goal is that I definitely want my shooting percentage to go up,” said McGarrey. “I also think I need to work on faking the goalie before I shoot. The timing of my cuts have improved since the beginning of the season, but I still would like to work on my 1v1’s.”

In the second half for the Owls, Natalie Pansini and Daniela Wright added their first goals of the afternoon. Lila Barker scored her second goal with a little over five minutes left to play and Laura Pansini scored her 202nd goal of her career with 58-seconds left on the clock to lock-in the win for the Irwins.

Final: Agnes Irwin 17, Baldwin 4.

Looking ahead to next season, although Baldwin is losing a few seniors, head coach Marisa Lozano explained that she has a deep sophomore and freshmen class.

“We have a talented freshmen and sophomore class coming in, especially in our mid-field. I think with the young players its getting their mental toughness to match their physical toughness and their skill,” said Lozano. “Our biggest improvement throughout the year was having our underclassmen grasping that mentality of toughness and pushing through.”

“We faced a ton of adversity this year and they never gave up they showed up the next game and came up with some upsets and gave some teams some close calls. The biggest thing for us is to continue to improve and to get mentally tough,” Lozano added.

For AIS, this season was definitely a test of strength, as the Irwins had the toughest strength of schedule in the country - playing against four high school lacrosse teams that were ranked in the Top 25 in the Nation.

“Nobody in the country had our strength of schedule this season,” said Duckenfield. “We are building a program, not just a winning season. We have an 8th grader and freshmen that play on the field and they know what it takes to play at a high level and the commitment that it takes to develop their skills and to be dedicated to their teammates.”

At the end of the game, the Senior Day festivities continued over ice cream, hot dogs and hamburgers as the Irwins celebrated their successful season and earning their third consecutive title as Inter-Ac Champions.
