WYNCOTE, PA – The hot weather yesterday afternoon wasn’t the only thing that was on fire – the other was the Bambie’s offense. St. Hubert’s visited Bishop McDevitt for their first Philadelphia Catholic League match-up of the season.

In the first half of the game, Gianna Labovitz scored the Bambies first goal off an assist from teammate, Ashley Wallace. The Lancers answered four minutes later with a goal from midfielder, Julia Rock, tying the game 1-1. With five minutes remaining in the half, St. Hubert’s senior, Megan Vogler, scored her first of two goals putting the Bambies in the lead by one entering the half.

The Bambies’ momentum continued into the second half with Vogler adding her second goal of the afternoon due to a penalty stroke, making the score 3-1. With a little over 10 minutes to play, Sam DiCicco slipped one past Hubert’s goalie, adding McDevitt’s second goal of the afternoon. Gianna Labovitz added her second goal of the contest off an assist from Volger with 1:56 left on the game clock. Final: St. Hubert’s 4, Bishop McDevitt 2.

For the Bambies, this first win marks a major shift in confidence from last season.

“We had a rough year last year, we ended the season with zero wins. It wasn’t a lack of effort, we just couldn’t find a way to get the ball in the back of the net,” said Bambies head coach Theresa Gorman. “We worked a lot offensively. I feel like the cohesiveness on this team is a lot different than years before. We are supporting each other off the field and on the field. The girls complement each other very well and I think it came together for us.”

For St. Hubert’s, having success on the field this season all comes down to team effort and working as a unit.

“There is not just one or two special players. Everyone is developing off of the person that is next to them. Everyone has a different role and they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” said Gorman.

Coming into the season, Bishop McDevitt’s team spent the week training in Walt Disney World. The Lancers had the opportunity to polish their skills while playing in a tournament against teams from across the country.

“The caliber of play in Disney was tougher than what you normally see in the PCL, and we really played well against these teams from California, New York, New Jersey and Maryland,” said Dowd. “Prior to going down, we worked on new skills and when we got there we executed the skills really well and the girls were just in sync.”

Although McDevitt couldn’t pull off their first PCL victory, the season is still young and Dowd still has high hopes for her team going forward.

“All in all, it might have been a little bit of nerves, but I feel they did play well and to the best of my expectations,” said Dowd. “Our focus for the season is still to win District 12A. This team does have the capabilities. I told them that they need to forget what happened today and focus on improving, we need to be crisper, and this team can do it.”

Looking Ahead: Bishop McDevitt will face George Washington HS away this Friday before having another league match-up vs. Cardinal O’Hara on Sept. 14. St. Hubert’s will host Conwell-Egan at their home field in Russo Park on Sept. 14th.
