PHILADELPHIA- After coming up short to Central Bucks High School East earlier in the week, the Lady Vikings got back to their winning ways with a win over West Catholic.

This was Archbishop Wood’s first victory of the season.

Wood dominated West Catholic, needing only three sets to claim victory. In the first set, Wood won 25-9, followed by a 25-6 win in the second, and then lastly, a 25-10 win in the third and final set.

It is hard to fault West Catholic on the loss, their youth and lack of experience was a major factor in their defeat. They have a lot of heart,” said Archbishop Wood head coach Maureen Thorpe.

“West Catholic is a growing team, they have great sportsmanship, and they truly give it there all and never let a ball drop without a player going after it,” said senior defender Noelle Sheridan.

This was an important win for Wood and kept the team from starting out their season on a losing streak. Losing ten seniors from last year’s team is a big enough obstacle for this Wood team to overcome; starting the year in a 0-2 hole would just be piling on.

Despite such an askew win, Thorpe felt there were some areas her team could improve upon, specifically play recognition on defense.

“I'd like to know that our defense can read or see a play develop, and that they understand the options that the opposing team can use against us so that we can defend, and quickly transition into our offense.  A fast transition is something that we are constantly trying to improve upon,” said Thorpe.

Given that this was the first win of her senior year, Sheridan could not help but feel a little sentimental.

“Starting my senior season is bittersweet. Archbishop Wood volleyball has been such a big part of my life over these past four years. Many memories have been made and many things will be missed but I am also excited to see what the future holds. A personal goal I have for this year is to put everything I have into every game and practice. To focus and appreciate everything even the days that aren't so great because I know soon it will all be over soon and I will be wishing I could go back,” said Sheridan.

There is a long road Archbishop Wood must travel if they have hopes of retaining their Catholic League title, but according to Thorpe, her team is up to the challenge.

“This is a league that has strong and talented teams, and they're getting better every year,” said Thorpe, “and as last year's champions, we'll get the best from every team that we play.”

Next league match for the Lady Vikings is Tuesday 9/13 against Lansdale Catholic.
