PHILADELPHIA- St. Hubert’s girls’ soccer team hosted Archbishop Wood Wednesday for their first game of the Philadelphia Catholic League season.

The game was played at Hubert’s home location at the scenic River Fields in Holmesburg, PA. For spectators you could not have asked for a more picturesque landscape than with the Delaware river as your backdrop.

For the St. Hubert’s Bambies, you could not have asked for a better day to do something this team has not done in a very, very, long time…. beat the Lady Vikings.

What seemed to be a sure thing for the Lady Vikings turned into a tightly contested match.

Defenses ran high on both sides of the field with a scoreless first half.

But things started to change. The Bambies came out in the second half and dominated the field defensively.

Halfway through the second half that is when it happened, Hubert’s senior midfielder Dominique Calio sank the one and only game winning goal right over the head of Wood’s goalie Molly Fleming.

The Wood attackers tried their best with rush after rush in the O zone but had nothing to show for it. For this game, it was Hubert’s defense that was in the right place at the right time.

Hubert’s head coach Mick McGroarty has a new campaign for his team this year and it centers around building that strong defensive line and it showed.

The Lady Vikings seemed to be lacking in their passing techniques and ground communication. Two areas they say they will be working on in practice before their next game.

Wood's next match is on 9/15 on the road against Bonner-Prendie.

The Bambies will also be on the road as they face Archbishop Carroll on 9/13.
