GIRLS’ TENNIS: Penn Charter Named Overall Champion At Inter-Ac Tennis Championships

NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA – Yesterday afternoon, Episcopal Academy hosted the Inter-Ac girls’ tennis singles and doubles championships in a day long tournament.

The day began in a round-robin format, with each Inter-Ac team participating in a series of matches, which ultimately determined the pairings for the semifinal rounds in the afternoon.

 Penn Charter, who outright won this years Inter-Ac title due to their 5-0 league start, came out of the day as the overall champion. The Quakers had a team representative in each of the final rounds, solidifying the depth and dexterity of their roster. 

“My three singles players are tournament level players. Between the three of them, only my No. 3, Leila Soe, lost one match. My No. 1 and No. 2 singles Brindlea LaBarge and Schuyler LaBarge haven’t lost a match this season,” said Quakers head coach, Rose Weinstein, who has been at the helm for 14 years. “The girls get along well. I’m very proud of my team. It is quite an honor to win our league and to win this champions tournament in the same year.”

Overall, the Quakers took first place in No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles and in No. 2 and 3 doubles.

ND’s No. 2 doubles team of Sarah Crinnion & Makenzie Irvine reflect on their long match vs. AIS

The Academy of Notre Dame’s first doubles team of Natalie Hughes and Grace Leasure managed to steal a first place victory against Episcopal with a match score of 8-3.

“This was our first season playing together and I’m really happy we did. This was Grace’s final season and I really wanted to make it good for her. We really came together as a team, so it was a lot of fun,” said ND junior, Natalie Hughes.

Notre Dame’s second doubles team of Sarah Crinnion and Makenzie Irvine took home the third place trophy in their respective category, however the duo definitely competed in the match of the afternoon. Crinnion and Irvine were the last to leave the court after winning a thrilling tie-breaker, 14-12.

Win or lose, all teams represented their schools in the utmost fashion, showcasing their team spirit and noble sportsmanship on and off the courts the entire afternoon.
