Another season is officially in the books.

From late August to mid-November, we have seen close calls, records broken, upsets and thrillers. The 2016 regular season for the Philadelphia Catholic and Inter-Academic Leagues sure did not disappoint.

For starters, let’s take a brief look at PCL boys’ soccer. At the end of the regular season, the collective league records of La Salle, Father Judge and Roman Catholic came to 26-1-6, with La Salle and Roman coming out unscathed in PCL play.

“This season showed what the PCL is all about, with really well-matched teams that played close matches,” said La Salle head soccer coach, Tom McCaffery. “When there are two undefeated teams in the same league, it is awesome.”

Now, let’s glance at Inter-Ac football. Coming into league play, Germantown Academy, Malvern Prep, Penn Charter, Springside Chestnut Hill, Episcopal Academy and the Haverford School formed a composite 24-5 record. Germantown Academy pulled off a 21-14 victory over Haverford (a feat they haven’t accomplished in 10 years) to give them at least a share of the 2016 Inter-Ac title.

At the end of the season, with the right win-loss formula, there could have quite possibly been a four-way tie for first place. However, the Patriots and Friars won their respective games, resulting in only a two-way share of the title.

“We’re a really close-knit team. We’re a family. A test of a really good team is how close you are in crunch time and how you’re gonna stick together,” said Malvern Prep running back, Zac Fernandez.

After calculating league wins and competing in physical playoff rounds, there were teams that managed to rise to the occasion in order to leave the field, court, course or pool as a newly crowned champions.
