The Patriots would take a commanding 29-0 lead by the end of the first half with half of the points scored by junior Alexa Naessens. Agnes Irwin could not find a way to put the ball in the net until the final minutes of the third quarter when Mary Grace Miller drilled a three.

The final would remain in Germantown Academy’s favor with a 52-12 win.

The Patriots recorded 17 steals throughout the game, seven of which were by Naessens. Agnes Irwin stole five times but could not capitalize on scoring from those possessions. From the foul line GA went 16 for 30 and AIS shot 1 for 4.

“The game was more of a learning experience for us.” said Naessens, who scored a total of 20 points and recorded 12 rebounds. “The past few games we’ve had trouble setting up our offense and this game we got to run it right and really start our offense.”

Behind Naessens, sophomore Rachel Balzer scored 8 for the Patriots and freshmen Jaye Haynes and Elle Stauffer put five points each on the board.

Half of Agnes Irwin’s points were scored by senior Caroline Coyne, the rest split between Katie Anderson (1), Mary Grace Miller (3), and Taryn Kelly (2).

Despite the loss, Irwin’s head coach Paul Capodanno looks forward to the bright future for his team.

“This is our first year together, so we’re trying to build together and take our small victories and turn them into bigger ones,” he said.

“Together, we’re trying to do everything as a unit. We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores who have a lot of work to do, but I think in a couple years will be very successful.”

Looking Ahead: Germantown Academy looks to extend their five game win streak against Springside Chestnut Hill Academy on Tuesday, January 10. Agnes Irwin will match up against Pope John Paul on Monday, January 9.
