Seniors Wu and Joyce Lead Varsity A Squash to Third Consecutive Inter-Ac Title

Haverford, PA – The varsity A squash team clinched its third consecutive Inter-Ac squash title on Jan. 11 with a 6-3 win over rival Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. Playing away at SCHA in front of a large, vocal home crowd, the Fords knew it would be a tough battle under difficult conditions. The first round of matches ended up at a 2-2 tie when juniors Peter Miller and Sam Turner won their matches convincingly but freshman Christian Shah and senior Will Glaser were unable to pull out a win. Glaser’s match went to five games, but ended with a very narrow loss for the Fords. The pressure was now officially on. The second round of matches showcased definitive wins by junior Grant Sterman and sophomore Spencer Yager. A loss by junior P.J. Rodden left the score at Haverford 4 games, SCHA 3. It was now up to seniors Bill Wu and Duncan Joyce to clinch the victory for the team. Wu’s match went on court first and he was able to secure a 3-1 win, giving the Fords their title. Joyce capped it all off with a 3-1 victory over SCHA’s No. 1 player.
“We knew the conditions at SCHA would be very difficult. Our plan was to let the racquets do the talking,” said Haverford head coach Asad Khan, “I am proud of how all the guys handled it today. We really pulled together as a team to win out in a very tough atmosphere.”
The varsity A Fords now have another undefeated regular season under their belts. Next up will be the MASA championships in early February followed by the U.S. High School National Championships, where they will be top seeds for both.
