PHILADELPHIA – It was a beautiful day yesterday as William Penn Charter School hosted the 2017 Inter-Ac League’s track and field championships.

The Academy of Notre Dame took home the Inter-Ac Title for the girls’ track and field events with a combined score of 93.50.

Penn Charter claimed the boys’ Inter-Ac Title with a combined events score of 139.50.

Junior Tina D’Anjolell placed first for the Irish in the 100m dash (12.67) and in the 200m dash (26.06). Sophomore Jessica Schneider placed second in the 800m (2:21.61) as well as in the 1600m run (5:10.54). Junior Alessandra Ciampi seized first in the 100m hurdles (16.23) as well as the 300m hurdles with a time of 48.92.

On the field, Kristen Burten came in second for the Academy of Notre Dame in the pole vault (8-06).

Episcopal Academy came in second with a score of 92 and third place went to Germantown Academy with a combined score of 83.

Penn Charter senior Akeem Blake seized first in the long jump at 23-07 and triple jump at 44-08.50 and placed second in the high jump at 6-09. Blake’s long jump of 23-07 tied the Inter-Ac record set in 1949 by Penn Charter's Dick Hazard. Senior Chris Tucker took first place in the 100m (11.02) and 200m (22.00) and sophomore Edward Saydee was right nearby taking second in the 100 (11.26) and third in the 200m (22.88).

Penn Charter sophomore Marcellus Poland (50.34) and junior Matt Barkann (50.90) finished 1-2 in the 400m dash.  Senior Dylan Burnett placed third in the 110m hurdles (14.92) and 300m hurdles (40.86). Sophomore Akeel Blake (42-50) and junior Tzion Jones (41-11) enabled the Quakers to finish 1-2-3 in the triple jump. Senior Edgar McIlvaine took third in the pole vault with a height of 11-06.

Germantown Academy came in second with a combined score of 100.50 followed by The Haverford School with a combined score of 66.

Germantown Academy junior, Kyle Garland, was named the 2017 Male Performer of the Meet. Garland scored 40 points (the most possible) by winning the high jump, shot put, 110m high hurdles and 300m hurdles. In the high jump, Garland missed his first two attempts at 6-9 after PC’s Akeem Blake made his first attempt. He opted to pass his final jump at 6-9, meaning he would get one jump at 6-10 to stay in the competition. After the wind blew the bar down on his first approach, Garland cleared the height, ultimately winning the competition in a new meet record of 6-10.

Garland also set a new GA school record of 51-5 to take first place in the shot put competition. In the 300m hurdles, Garland was actually behind going over the final hurdle, but his dive at the line gave him the victory by .03 seconds (for another school record) at 38.85.

Germantown Academy senior, Abbe Goldstein, was named the 2017 Female Performer of the Meet. Goldstein won all three of her individual events: the 800m, 1600m, 3200m, and ran anchor on the 4x400m relay that finished fourth. Goldstein set a new meet record in the 3200m with 11:03.97 to break the previous record of 11:24.98 by over 20 seconds, which was set by GA’s Maggie Hallahan. Goldstein also won the 1600m in 2014 and 2015 (she was abroad in 2016) and the 3200 in 2015.
