PHILADELPHIA-- Most Catholic League football teams have reached the halfway point of division play. This is when teams can’t help but look ahead to see where they stand.

In the Red Division, La Salle and St. Joseph’s Prep are on a collision course to decide the league title when they meet October 20 at Widener University. It is conceivable that Archbishop Wood could create a three-way tie, but that would require a win over La Salle and a Prep loss to La Salle. One of those might happen, but two? Unlikely.

The Blue Division contains much more drama. Neumann-Goretti is undefeated at 2-0 while Lansdale Catholic and West Catholic are 2-1. But behind them in fourth place is rugged defending champion Cardinal O’Hara, which has outscored its foes by 139 to 16. Might the Lions repeat? Too much can happen.

In the meantime, here is a recap of this past weekend of Catholic League football.

In the Catholic Red, La Salle whipped Father Judge, 34-0. Senior quarterback Danny Solecki continues to impress. He completed 18 of 28 passes for 195 yards a touchdown toss to senior Troy Holland (5 catches for 58 yards). Senior Octavious Carter accumulated 122 all-purpose yards while senior Joey Burnham gained 75 yards and a TD.

Archbishop Wood dominated Archbishop Ryan, 42-6. On the first play of the game, senior Nasir Peoples rumbled 73 yards for a touchdown. It would be a portent. Despite playing only one half, Peoples collected 177 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries. He has now scored five games in a row. Senior Tyler Smith intercepted a pass, as did junior Kevin Otto, his third of the season.

Previously winless Roman Catholic blanked Archbishop Carroll, 6-0, on a fourth-quarter, 13-yard touchdown run by senior Marquise Cooper, along with a bend-but-not-break defense. More on this game is included on website in our "Game of the Week" segment.

In the Catholic Blue, Bonner-Prendergast edged Bishop McDevitt, 20-16, for its first victory of the year. Senior Kyrin Johnson caught four passes for 176 yards and scored three touchdowns, two on passes from junior quarterback Shon Nelson. Senior Tamiko McDaniel and sophomore Ian Edwards helped the defense with interceptions, helping offset McDevitt freshman Jon-Luke Peaker’s 106 yards and TD run on 14 carries.

Lansdale Catholic stopped Conwell-Egan, 31-21, behind the torrid running game of senior Matt Casee (106 yards and three TDs on 17 carries) and sophomore Danny Dutkiewicz (20 carries for 136 yards and a touchdown). C-E junior quarterback Patrick Garwo rushed for 66 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
