CATHOLIC LEAGUE GAME OF THE WEEK

Who: Neumann-Goretti vs. Cardinal O’Hara

When: 7 PM Friday, October 20

Where: Cardinal O’Hara High School

Records: Neumann-Goretti 6-0, 4-0; Cardinal O’Hara 6-1, 3-1

Most Recent Performance:  N-G whipped Lansdale Catholic, 40-7; O’Hara got past pesky Conwell-Egan, 20-13.

Importance: Neumann-Goretti would wrap up the Blue Division crown with a victory. If Cardinal O’Hara prevails, it would need to defeat West Catholic in its season finale to clinch the championship.

All-Time Record: Cardinal O’Hara leads comfortably, 25-12-2.

Neumann-Goretti Notes: The Saints’ vaunted defense has surrendered one touchdown apiece in each of the last five games . . . The backfield of seniors Leddie Brown and Chris Wells has amassed 834 yards and 11 rushing scores . . . Brown has scored three TDs rushing, one receiving, and one on a kickoff return. Eight of Wells’ touchdowns were runs; he also scored via a kickoff return . . . Junior quarterback Charles Britt has tossed seven touchdown passes, four of them to senior Jaron Macon . . . The Saints have intercepted eight passes.

Cardinal O’Hara Notes: Although occasionally susceptible to the run, the play of seniors Tyric Gould (line), Tom Wertz (line), Jamir Redd (linebacker), Cam Blair (linebacker), Justin Santilla (defensive back), and Josh McAllister (defensive back) has helped the defense surrender only four touchdowns and intercept nine passes, including at least one in every game . . . Senior Taseer Jones has scored eight touchdowns – five on rushes, one on a pass, and two on interception returns . . . The wide receiver duo of Santilla and junior Chris Kirby has combined for 27 catches, 281 yards, and six touchdowns.

SAINT CHAT: “The mood we are in preparing for this game is that we have to be really focused this week,” said junior wide receiver/defensive back Tre’Sean Bouie. “They’re the defending Blue Division Catholic League champs, so we need to have a really competitive and enthusiastic week. To win, we just need to do our jobs.”

“All week we just basically focus on being better then last week,” said senior strong safety and kick returner Dymir Cave. “We try to outwork other teams, which takes sacrifice.”

“My team and I are generally confident and trust our coaches with our bodies and what they basically teach,” said senior linebacker/defensive end Jayvonne Campfield. “Going into this game we are expecting to do our best and have good sportsmanship with whatever the outcome is. My team and I have come to the agreement that we will battle our rivals with all our strength. We will not be cocky, but be confident and sure of our hard work and talents. We will be humble whether we win or lose. We are optimistic, yet we will also keep our minds open to all other negative possibilities. What we have to do to win is work hard in practice, stay focused, have positive mindsets, be confident not cocky, stay humble, have heart, listen to and trust our coaches, be mindful and compassionate of one another, and work collectively as a team to meet our goal, which is to win.”

“The mood for this game is the same mood for every game,” said senior running back/wide receiver/kick returner Chris Wells. “We don’t sleep on any of our opponents. To win, all we have to do is our jobs. Nobody can beat us but ourselves.”

LION CHAT: “I think the team is ready to go,” said senior two-way lineman Tom Wertz. “We know how big this game is and how important it is for our season, so we're focused in and will be all week. I think we'll be ready to go. As far as the rivalry goes it is tough to gauge. Not playing them last year was tough for us because it gave us an unexpected bye week in the middle of the season. We beat them on our home field two years ago, though, and I'm sure they remember that, so it will be an intense game. I think as a team we just have to win the night. We can't let the hype of some of their players and the ratings and the standings get in our heads. We just have to focus on winning individual battles and doing our jobs and focus on winning this game and all else will fall into place.”

“We feel that this game coming up we have to be almost close to perfect and have to be tuned in to the game plan and what the coaches say,” said senior defensive end/left tackle Kenny Borrelli. “As a team, if every player on each side of the ball does their job and gives 110 percent every snap, we will win the game.”

“Heading into this game, the team is very excited to play Neumann,” said senior free safety Josh McCalister-Afflick. “We all know it might be a tough game, but everyone is ready to take on the challenge. The whole team knows that this is a must-win game. We must play as a team to win. If we all communicate, do our jobs , and trust each other, we can and will win the game.”

“The mood of the team right now is confident,” said senior inside linebacker Cameron Blair. “We feel good coming off of three straight division wins, and that will carry over into the game. The rivalry between us and them is gonna be like any other game. It won’t be like an O’Hara vs. Bonner game, but this game is going to mean a lot more to both teams. I think we just need to go out and take care of the football and take it away from them, create some turnovers on defense, and capitalize on offense.”

“The guys are excited,” said senior wide receiver/defensive back Justin Santilla. “We want the PCL championship again, and they are a team we have to beat to get back there. To win, we just have to have a no-mistake mentality to beat this team.”

Prediction: On paper, Neumann-Goretti should win. The Saints have a better record and better overall statistics, though not by much. Here’s the skinny, though. O’Hara has played one very bad game, a 10-7 loss to Bishop McDevitt, along with a handful of very solid efforts. But the Lions have yet to play a really outstanding game. This week, they do. The defending champs eke out a dramatic 24-22 classic.
