The girls’ soccer playoffs are well underway in Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) action. Conwell-Egan Catholic, Lansdale Catholic and Archbishop Wood all secured victories in the quarterfinal round of the PCL playoffs on Thursday, October 19, 2017 to continue the season in the semifinal round.

“The Catholic League is a very competitive league,” said Conwell-Egan head coach Andrzej Adamiec. “It helps get us ready for the States.”

Conwell-Egan Catholic (No. 6 seed) has made history this year. The Eagles (8-7-3, 5-4-2) registered their first ever quarterfinal win when they defeated host St. Hubert (No. 3 seed) in a 2-0 shutout. Theresa Richardson scored unassisted. Ali Wojton had a penalty kick strike sending her team to the semifinals. Teammate Maddy Terry made eight saves.

Conwell-Egan had fallen to St. Hubert earlier this year by a score of 2-1. This time the Eagles were in the lead and so that helped.

“We were ahead this time,” said Adamiec. “We didn’t have to make adjustments. We were pressuring them.”

Leading the way on defense for the Bambies was goalkeeper Celine Tobin (six saves). St. Hubert finishes the year at 10-7-2 overall and 8-3-1 in the PCL.

No. 2 Lansdale Catholic (15-3-1) dominated visiting No. 7 Archbishop Carroll, 4-0, in a quarterfinal match of the PCL playoffs for its tenth consecutive berth in the semifinals. Lansdale Catholic had its work cut out for itself much more so than in the regular season matchup with Carroll. Defense remained solid the whole 80 minutes and Kate Henesey (assist) tallied two goals for the Crusaders. Sarah Fitzpatrick (one assist) and Emily Schall rounded out the scoring.

“Kate Henesey proved to be the standout player as advertised, scoring twice and assisting on one more goal to lead her team,” said Lansdale Catholic head coach Tom O’Donnell.

No. 4 Wood hosted and blanked No. 5 Cardinal O’Hara, 3-0, in another quarterfinal contest. Kasey McCormick found the net twice with Paige Hoeger and Caitlyn Cliggett assisting. Liz McCloud accounted for her team’s other goal extending the year.

The Philadelphia Catholic League semifinals are set for Thursday, October 26, at United German-Hungarians Soccer Club in Trevose. Two-time champion Lansdale Catholic takes on defending champion Archbishop Wood at 5:00 PM.

The Crusaders upset the Vikings, 5-1, during the regular season and are determined to prove that was no mistake as Wood seeks revenge this time around.

“We look ready to move to the semifinals,” said O’Donnell. “The excitement continues to build for us.”

Ironically, Conwell-Egan Catholic has sealed its place in the semifinals against the top-seeded Archbishop Ryan Ragdolls. The improvement and growth the Eagles have shown over the course of time may bring a different result in this crucial game.

“Ryan dominated us, 5-0,” said Adamiec. “We’ll see what happens. We’re better than we were at the beginning of the season.”

Egan and Ryan will take the field following Lansdale and Wood at 7:30 PM.
