Inter-Ac Football Round-Up

One team clinching a share of the league crown and another avoiding championship elimination highlighted the penultimate week of Inter-Ac football.

Led by a torrid offense and a miserly defense, Malvern Prep (5-4 overall, 4-0 league) quadrupled Germantown Academy, 28-7. The visiting Friars received 138 yards and two touchdowns from senior O’Shaan Allison, his fourth straight triple-digit performance. Junior quarterback Drew Gunther completed 12 of 18 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown to junior Quincy Watson, who contributed 120 combined yards and two scores.

For the Patriots (4-5, 1-3), freshman Lacey Snowden tossed his first career touchdown, with senior Mike Reilly doing the receiving honors.

“This was a great team win,” said Malvern junior offensive tackle Jake Hornibrook. “We played well on both sides of the ball. It was good to beat Germantown Academy because we had to share the Inter-Ac with them last year.”

The Friars have allowed less than two touchdowns four straight games. They can clinch the Inter-Ac title with a win over Springside Chestnut Hill in the season finale or a Penn Charter loss to Germantown Academy.

Speaking of Penn Charter, the Quakers improved to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the league after dominating visiting Episcopal Academy, 42-17. While the defense allowed 178 yards of total offense, junior Eddie Saydee (141 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries), senior Will Samuel (7 for 11 passing, 153 yards, two touchdowns), and senior John Washington (4 catches for 122 yards and three total touchdowns) proved too much for the Churchmen.

Episcopal (5-4, 2-2) was shorthanded, missing injured star running back DeeWil Barlee’s 1,000-plus-yards, 16-touchdown resume. Senior Adam Robinson and junior Jack Bush hooked up for both EA scores.

For a share of Inter-Ac gold, the Quakers need to defeat Germantown Academy and hope for a Malvern Prep upset loss against Springside Chestnut Hill.

“The only thing that we are focused on right now is winning the next game,” said junior running back/defensive back Eddie Saydee. “We can’t afford to waste time thinking about things out of our control. So we’re just going to play our part, win on Saturday against GA, and let everything else happen.”

Springside Chestnut Hill (6-4, 2-2) edged Haverford School, 24-20. Junior quarterback Aaron Angelos fired his 10th TD pass of the season. Senior Myles Hugee caught six passes for 106 yards and a touchdown while senior Nick Logue scored twice.

The Fords (1-8, 0-4) stayed close behind junior Nate Whitaker’s two long touchdown receptions on hauls from Patrick Toal (90 yards) and junior Ben Gerber (40 yards), with Toal also scoring on a keeper. Unfortunately, Toal would later suffer a serious knee injury during a junior varsity game. Sources said it is hopeful that his rehabilitation will not hamper the multi-athletic sophomore during baseball season.

The horizon was much less cloudy for Springside Chestnut Hill.

“The win was huge for us for many reasons,” said SCH senior two-way tackle Anthony Marrone. “First, it was senior day and we wanted our last home game to be a victory. Second, the win secured a winning season. The win said our team is back on the right track. That makes all of us, especially the seniors, very, very proud.”
