HAVERFORD, PA--  The super season continues for The Haverford School basketball team. After having clinched a tie for the Inter-Academic League title by virtue of an 83-58 victory against Malvern Prep the previous Friday, the Fords officially captured the league championship with a 62-43 win Tuesday over Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

The victory raised the Fords’ record to 19-5 overall and 9-0 in the league.

“It feels nice,” said Haverford School head coach Bernie Rogers. “Kids put in hard work.”

This marked Haverford’s first Inter-Ac title since 1999. The Fords simply made good shots at opportune times though they had to watch out for sophomore guard Ke’Shawn Williams, who led the way for SCH with 13 points.

“It was hard to know where he was,” said Rogers. “They were shooting good.”

Haverford and Springside Chestnut Hill have always faced a fierce rivalry when taking on one another. SCH has shown tremendous growth and improvement this season, as it has fallen to Haverford by lopsided scores in previous years.

“They are very experienced,” said SCH head coach Julian McFadden. “It was a good learning experience for us.”

Freshman guard Christian Clover gave Haverford a quick 2-0 lead. Junior forward Jack McDonald tied it up but a three-point field goal by senior guard Kharon Randolph resulted in a permanent advantage for the Fords. Junior guards Christian Ray and Gavin Burke also chipped in for Haverford and the team held a 17-8 surplus at the end of the opening quarter.

Williams kept SCH in the game as the second quarter progressed as did junior forward Zyon Grant but Haverford secured a 31-22 halftime lead.

The Fords doubled that lead in the third quarter as it increased to 47-27. Nevertheless, it was not over. Williams hit a three-point field goal early in the fourth quarter. Teammate and junior forward also scored as did junior guard Jesse Balcer Jr but Haverford did not get the least bit discouraged. Freshman guard Tyler Seward, senior guard Nasir Smith and senior center Bob Stratts combined for a sprint that made the score 62-41. Grant scored one last time but that was the game.

Following the buzzer, the Fords were able to cut the nets of their home court for the first time in nearly two decades. They knew it was not over until it was over as they have been in tight situations many a time.

“Experience helped,” said Rogers. “We’ve been in that position a lot this year. SCH played really hard. We held them to five points in the third quarter.”

The opening round of the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) playoffs is set for Tuesday, February 13th.

“I feel good about where we are and where the program stands,” said McFadden.

The Fords play away tonight in their final game of the Inter-Ac season against William Penn Charter. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
