HAVERFORD, PA – What a day it was for The Haverford School Fords’ lacrosse team when it opened up its Inter-Ac League action hosting the William Penn Charter Quakers on a sunny and warm Friday, April 13, 2018. Haverford emerged with a 10-5 victory to begin its league play on a strong note.

“It was awesome,” said senior TJ Malone, who finished with four goals and two assists. “It was a great win.”

What made this day even more special was that it was also the Fords’ senior day. All 15 seniors were recognized on the field with their parents before the game. In addition to Malone, they include Jackson Spahr, Xavier Dorn, Payton Hollway, Luke O’Grady, Jack Denious, Tim Carlson, Tucker Desperito, Bobby Gibson, Will Yoh, Mbogo Mwangi, Harrison Fellheimer, Edward King, Scott Deck and Graham Haabestad.

“It makes me realize we have little time left,” said Malone who will be playing at Amherst College next year. “I worked hard as a freshman. It’s been paying off these past two years. It’s awesome to lead this group of guys.”

The Fords’ senior class proved to be tough on the Quakers’ young squad as Penn Charter only brings back three senior starters from last season.

“We missed a lot of opportunities early,” said Penn Charter head coach Patrick McDonough. “They’re a really good team. We have a lot of young guys.”

Deck recorded a hat trick on his senior day. Junior Peter Garno, Hollway and O’Grady tallied the remaining Haverford goals. Senior Luke Brogan scored twice for Penn Charter.

The Fords went in to this crucial game knowing full well that the Quakers play a tough zone defense. Leading the way for them was junior goalkeeper Carson Marano (nine saves) along with junior Gavin Tygh.

“They allow us to stay in games,” said McDonough. “Carson is a good goalie.”

Fellheimer stopped a total of 11 shots on the afternoon. Teammate and junior Sage Garito recorded three saves.

Penn Charter returns to inter-Ac League action Friday, April 20, when it hosts Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

“We have to learn from mistakes,” said McDonough. “There are things to improve on.”

“We want to win the Inter-Ac League,” said Malone. “It’s been a good season.”
