NEWTOWN SQUARE, PA--The William Penn Charter Quakers’ soccer team traveled to Episcopal Academy  for an Inter Ac League match September 21. Penn Charter had its scoring in check and was able to capitalize for a 3-0 shutout against the Churchwomen.

“We finished our opportunities when they were presented to us,” said Penn Charter head coach Darci Spencer.

This outcome kept the Quakers undefeated on the season thus far with a record of 4-0-1. They knew they would have their work cut out as EA is always an intense rival in the competitive league.

“It’s always a battle when we play them,” said Spencer. “They’re contenders for the league each year along with us.”

The Churchwomen saw their record slip to 2-4-1.

“They were making impressive saves,” said Episcopal Academy head coach Andy Fraggos.

Penn Charter sophomore forward Janae Stewart got on the board in the opening half and her team secured a permanent surplus right then and there.

Sophomore midfielder Kait Haughey maintained the pace leading the Quakers to two more goals during the second stanza to call it a game.

“It was defensive teamwork,” said Haughey. “Otherwise, it wouldn’t have happened.”

Also leading the way in Penn Charter’s midfield was senior midfielder Emma Maley.

“Every single person who went on that field today did their job,” said Spencer. “It was outstanding.”

The Quakers had many more chances to extend their lead but EA sophomore Allie Bush made six saves for her squad. Teammate and junior Laila Payton was also prominent on defense.

" We have all the right pieces," said Fraggos.

The Churchwomen hope to put those pieces together when they hit the road tomorrow to take on Academy of Notre Dame at 4 p.m.

In more league action, Penn Charter hosts Baldwin on October 2, at 4:00 p.m.

“I feel pretty good,” said Haughey. “We’re working hard. I’m excited for the season.”
