HAVERFORD, PA –The Episcopal Academy Churchmen defeated the Haverford School Fords on Saturday, Nov. 10 with a final score of 28-14.

In the last conference game for both rivals, the Fords came out short as they only recorded 168 total yards on offense. The Churchmen on the other hand rushed for over 200 yards as senior running back and Villanova commit DeeWil Barlee rushed for two touchdowns and well over 100 yards.

“It felt great to go out with a win, it means a lot to me to finish the right way,” said Barlee. “It impacted me a lot. Being at Episcopal Academy, it means a lot to me. It’s hard to put into words.”

But the thing that set the two teams apart was defense. Episcopal Academy forced the Fords to turn the ball over three times and recorded four sacks, all coming in the fourth quarter.

The rivalry between the two schools dates back to 1889, the second oldest rivalry in the Inter-Academic League. At the end of the Haverford/EA day, the school with the most events won between the two is presented a sweater consisting of the two schools’ colors. Even though Episcopal Academy won the football game, The Haverford School beat EA in the other four events (golf, cross country, soccer and water polo) and will be regaining the sweater after EA won it last year.

Ford’s head coach Michael Murphy talks to his players after the game.

“The sweater is really important to our school and that would be a big win for our school. It’s upsetting we lost this game, but that would be good for the school,” said senior quarterback Ben Gerber.

Overall, it was an important game for people to remember, especially the seniors on both teams. Whether it was their last game playing the game they love or a start to a new chapter, they gave it their all and wore their hearts on their sleeves.

“I loved playing my final game here where it all started for me and I feel so excited and so blessed that I got to do that,” said Haverford School senior offensive tackle and University of North Carolina commit Asim Richards.
