Players shake hands after EA victory

HAVERFORD, PA —This weekend the Haverford School was able to claim the sweater, with decades of tradition behind it, but was ultimately unable to sweep Episcopal Academy. The Churchmen took the football game 28-14 in a long standing rivalry between the two schools.

On his last drive of his high school career, senior DeeWil Barlee of EA carried the ball six consecutive times with his last carry resulting in the final touchdown of the game. On this drive, Barlee broke the school’s record for total rushing yards, a record previously held by his older brother.

“It felt great to go out with a win,” Barlee said. “[The win] means everything to me, the team, the whole EA community. It was special to us so it was a great win.”

Haverford did not go down without a fight. The Fords put up a quick eight on their opening drive and would add another six before the half was over. Unfortunately, these were all the points Haverford was able to put up throughout the game.

It was an emotional game all-around for Haverford's seniors, as this would be the last time they would play on their home turf. Senior quarterback Ben Gerber was picked off twice in the fourth quarter, which was not the way he wanted to end his senior season with the team.

“If you put the hard work in and you put the time in you’re going to get the results you want on the field,” Gerber said. “Trust the coaches, trust the process they are going lay forth.”

Asim Richards' family shows support for his final game of the season

Senior offensive tackle and defensive end Asim Richards was surrounded by members of his family for his last game as a Ford. He is a positive role model for the freshman he passes his jersey on to as well as the entire team.

“Play for each other, don’t play for yourself,” Richards said. “If you play for someone else, it will take you much further.”

This long standing private school rivalry is one of the oldest in the nation, much older than the sweater. In the 39 years since the sweater’s origin, Haverford has won the yearly rights to it 18 times and has tied with EA for it 6 times.
