HAVERFORD, PA -Yesterday marked the 38th annual “EA Day” between the Haverford School and Episcopal Academy. But the historic rivalry between these two schools actually dates back to 1889 when they faced off in their first football game.

The trophy of EA Day is a split sweater, half maroon and half blue, that lists the years that each school emerged victorious on this day and took home the sweater. To capture the sweater, the school must “win the day” by winning the majority of the games between the two schools (Football, golf, cross country, water polo and soccer).

This year, the sweater was captured by the Haverford School by winning the first four competitions. However, Haverford’s football team could not finish off the day with the final victory, as Episcopal won the contest 28-14.

Haverford’s senior quarterback, Ben Gerber, commented after the game on winning the sweater.

“The sweater is really important for our school and that is a big win for [us]. Right now obviously, it’s upsetting we didn’t win this game but that will be good for the school,” said Gerber.

Visually emotional over the fact that he just played his final game as a high schooler, Gerber was proud of his school for winning the sweater in his last year.

Haverford senior, Asim Richards, had more to say after on playing his final game in a Haverford uniform and what he’ll take with him as he takes his game to the collegiate level at the University of North Carolina.

“It’s an amazing feeling. I’d love to play my final game here, where it all started for me, and I just feel so excited and blessed that I got to do that,” said Richards. “Being a family, that’s what it’s all about, brotherhood. Play for each other. If you play for someone else, that takes you way farther I believe.”

Richards was extremely grateful to have the opportunity to play for the Haverford school and his emotions spoke for the all the seniors who couldn’t be more proud of what their school did as a whole on this day.
