PHILADELPHIA – On a frigid Wednesday night in late October, the Saint Joseph’s Prep Hawks met the Roman Catholic Cahillites at Archbishop Ryan High School for the Philadelphia Catholic League boys’ soccer semifinal game. Roman Catholic came into the playoffs as the first-seed and controlled the game against fourth-seed Saint Joe’s Prep.

The Cahillites dominated the game start to finish on both sides of the ball, paced by the leadership of junior goalie Kevin Tobin in goal and senior striker Jared Dillon.

Roman Catholic took an early lead, with two goals by Eric Williams and Kevin Davis, to go up 2-0 in the first half. Roman head coach Ray DeStephanis stressed the importance of staying aggressive with the lead.

“Yeah when you’re up by two, it’s the worst lead in soccer,” DeStephanis said. “So we didn’t sit back, until we got the third goal, then we were able to sit back.”

The third goal DeStephanis mentioned would come from senior Mark Iannacone early in the second half. After the game, senior defenseman Stephen Clugston noted the adjustments they made going into this matchup with the Prep.

“They like to play short, roll the ball out, so we cut off the passing lanes,” Clugston said about the Hawks’ offense, “we had to be patient and pounce when we needed to.”

The Hawks put together a valiant effort, led by their seniors on the back line, as well as the goalie.

“They are 80 minute guys, they play every minute of every game,” Saint Joe’s Prep coach Joe Coyle said of his seniors. “I would say to sum it up, our season started on January 3, and it ended on Wednesday night. That gives you an idea of what these guys invested in this season. They invested nine and a half months.”
