PHILADELPHIA– Stop me if you heard this one before: Roman Catholic is heading to the Philadelphia Catholic League Championship. On a chilly Wednesday night, October 24, Roman Catholic High School defeated St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in the PCL boys’ soccer semi-final matchup 3-0 to advance to their fifth straight PCL championship.

“The game plan going in was similar to what we did in the first game (referencing Prep’s first meeting against Roman Catholic). Move the ball, find spaces, and attack them like that,” said St. Joe’s Prep head coach, Joe Coyle.

The Prep’s game plan worked for the early portion of the game, but Roman’s high powering offense eventually took over. Senior forward, Eric Williams, put home a rebound in the back of the net to take the 1-0 lead. The next goal was the highlight of the match. A free kick goal right outside the eighteen taken by junior defender, Kevin Davis, dinked off the lower part of the crossbar and landed beyond the goal line.

“It was something routine that we practice a lot. I was just feeling the wind with the shot and felt like I was able to bend it in the back of the net,” said Davis.

It is difficult enough to score two goals on Roman’s defense, let alone the three that were needed once senior defender/forward, Mark Iannacone, made the score 3-0 in the second half with a goal of his own. Once the final whistle blew, the boys’ focus turned directly toward their date with Archbishop Wood on Sunday, October 28.

“I say it to everyone at practice, at warmups before the game and after the game, that it’s just a game and we’ve been playing it our whole lives. What’s there to be nervous about?” said senior forward, Tom Iarosis.

Roman defeated Wood earlier in the season with a 1-0 victory in a defensive battle. A lot of the same should be expected Sunday with two strong defenses backed behind two All-Catholic goalies. These schools are in for a battle come 4:00pm on Sunday afternoon.
