SPRINGFIELD, PA –Springfield High School JV girls’ field hockey faced off against Upper Dublin at Springfield to finish off both of their seasons on Tuesday, Oct. 16.

The Spartans, who lost their first match against Upper Dublin at the beginning of the season, managed to pull out a 2-1 win against the Cardinals.

JV head coach, Kim Gehlhaus recalls Upper Dublin scoring their first and only goal in their last game within the first 30-seconds of play. This time, Springfield decided to turn the tables and came out strong with a goal from junior, Madison Loscalzo within the first minute of play.

“I asked the girls to try and do [the same] to them and get back at them, and low and behold, Maddy Loscalzo went down and scored within the first 20 seconds,” said Gehlhaus.

Springfield went into the second half 1-0 over Upper Dublin and scored again to bring them up 2-0.

Post Game Interview with Maddy Loscalzo:

Upper Dublin’s JV head coach, Patti Greenwood told her girls to bring the same intensity they brought to practice the night before into the game, and they did. Upper Dublin went into the second half down one, got back into the game and managed to score to bring themselves right back into it.

“That first goal came so quickly, I think it was in the first 30 seconds of the game. I told the girls we were still in it. We said to hang in there and get back in it and we eventually did,” said Greenwood.

Springfield maintained their lead against the six-win Cardinals, finishing out the season with five total wins.

Gehlhaus attributes the win to their great job of keeping spread out, their refined stick skills and their lack of fails.

“We were very happy to come back and beat the team that beat us the first time around,” she said.

Both teams put up an impressive fight. With each JV team being made up of mostly freshman, it will be interesting to see how next year’s match-ups will end between the JV Spartans and the JV Cardinals.
