GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Germantown Academy Leaves Big Easy as Big Champions of the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic, Team Improves to 14-0

NEW ORLEANS –The Lady Patriots of Germantown Academy traveled down to the Big Easy over the weekend where the team competed in the Allstate Sugar Bowl National Prep Classic Basketball Tournament. 

The weekend classic, which took place January 2-5, featured multiple brackets showcasing the talents of high school boys’ and girls’ basketball teams from Alabama, Florida, California, Georgia, Mississippi, New York, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas and Pennsylvania.

The Patriots competed in the Girls’ Platinum bracket. In the first round, GA defeated McKinley High School (Baton Rouge, LA) 57-39. Junior guard Jaye Haynes scored 17 points, additionally recording four rebounds and five assists. Senior captain Rachel Balzer added 14 points in the game and junior captain Maddie Vizza scored 11 points, adding four assists and four steals.

Moving on to the semifinal round, the Patriots found themselves in a battle against John Curtis Christian School, the defending Louisiana state champions and 2018 Allstate Sugar Bowl tournament champions. Junior guard Elle Stauffer led GA with 17 points and five rebounds in route to a narrow 52-48 victory. 

In the Platinum championship, the Patriots defeated another local Louisiana team, North Caddo, 65-35. Stauffer, who was named game MVP, once again led the Patriots on the floor with 21 points and eight rebounds. Teammates Sarah DiLello and Becca Booth followed contributing 12 points apiece. Booth and Balzer were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Patriots are undefeated on the season at 14-0. This afternoon GA secured its second league victory of the season against Episcopal Academy. Stauffer recorded 21 points in the win. EA senior captain Olivia Dirks led the Churchwomen with eight points. 

Looking Ahead, GA will travel to the Baldwin School on Friday at 4:00 p.m. for more league action.
