BRYN MAWR, PA-- The William Penn Charter girls’ basketball team is off to a fine start this season and that continued Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the home of Baldwin in Inter-Ac League action. Penn Charter kept up its intensity for four whole quarters on the way to a 56-34 victory over Baldwin.
“We just kept our intensity up on the bench and on the court by making extra passes,” said Penn Charter junior Carmen Williams who finished with 16 points and ten rebounds.
This marked Penn Charter’s first game since the December 28th 71-29 win against Freire Charter. The Quakers have been on a victory high after winning their bracket at the Nike Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona the weekend of December 22nd. Nevertheless, the Quakers had no trouble getting back into the swing of things on the court.
“I’m glad to get this game under our belt,” said Penn Charter head coach Joseph Maguire. “It’s nice to get back to the regular schedule.”

Penn Charter improved to 14-2 on the season with this outcome. Baldwin dropped to 3-7 for the year so far. Despite a tough first half deficit, the Bears got used the Quakers’ style of play and managed to get going in the right direction.
“We played really tough,” said Baldwin sophomore Anajah Brown. “We eventually weathered the storm. It’s a process. If we keep working hard, we’ll eventually get the turnout that we want.”
“We have to cut down on our mistakes,” said Baldwin head coach John Bernhardt. “We’re moving the ball better. We showed toughness towards the third quarter.”

Penn Charter senior Emma Maley and sophomore Janae Stewart prevailed with nine points each on the afternoon. Junior Kaitlyn Carter secured four points, five rebounds and four assists.
“(Our) Girls’ just constantly compete,” said Maguire. “Everyone is unselfish. They’re happy to see each other succeed.”
Brown led Baldwin with a total of 22 points. Freshman Kaya Weiser and senior Taylor Levinson added four points apiece.
“It’s a learning process,” said Bernhardt. “We’re progressing, getting better.”
There is undoubtedly a long season ahead in the competitive Inter-Ac League. One of Penn Charter’s goals at this point is to ultimately take home the league trophy. Right now, the Quakers are taking it one day and one match at a time.
“We’re working hard every day in practice to get those wins,” said Maley.
