RADNOR, PA – Archbishop Carroll hosted Roman Catholic on Friday, January 26 in the Coaches vs. Cancer game. The Cahillites came away with the victory 70-66 in a very hard fought battle between the two Catholic League teams.

Roman took the early lead over Carroll in the first quarter, outscoring the Patriots 17-13. At the midway point of the first quarter, Archbishop Carroll sophomore guard AJ Hoggard picked up an early technical, which would end up being his only foul of the game.

Roman junior Seth Lundy contributed 6-points in the first quarter for the Cahillites while Keyon Butler, who is coming off a huge game against St. Joe’s Prep where he posted a double-double with 24 points (season high) and 11 rebounds, added 5-points for the Patriots.

In the second quarter, the Patriots quickly erased that deficit by out-scoring the Cahillites 20-13 and taking the lead at halftime 33-30. With 8.7 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Roman sophomore Lynn Greer III picked up a technical as well. For the Patriots, senior Justin Anderson tallied 11 of Carroll's 20 points in the second quarter and for the Cahillites, Lundy tallied 9 of their 13 points.

Coming out of halftime it was a back and forth battle between the two teams. Roman outscored Carroll 18-13 in the third quarter taking a 48-46 lead to enter the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was basket for basket and very close, but Roman escaped with the win with a score of 70-66.

The Cahillites were led by Lundy who finished with 30-points, four of which were three-pointers, and went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Greer III finished with 19-points and also went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. Senior Allen Betrand added 9-points and Hakim Hart added 6. The Cahillites went a perfect 17-of-17 from the free throw line, and together as a team, they made 23 field goals, 7 of which were from beyond the arc.

The Patriots were led by Hoggard, who finished with 21 points and was one assist shy of a double-double finishing with 9 and also adding three steals. Senior guard Justin Anderson finished with 17-points and added 5 boards. Junior forward Luke House finished with 16-points, 9 of which were made off of three-pointers. House also added 5 rebounds and two blocks. Senior forward Keyon Butler had 12 points and added 7 rebounds. As a team the Patriots went 11-15 from the charity stripe and tallied 24 total made field goals, 5 of which were three point field goals.

Carroll's Student Section Cheers During the Close Game

The atmosphere inside of Carroll’s gymnasium was electric. Even Lundy commented on the Patriot’s rowdy student section.

“The atmosphere, the crowd, it was crazy out there and I knew I couldn’t let that get to me. I feel like I play better in big crowds, so I knew that it was just going to be a bonus for me,” said Lundy, who tallied 30-points to his name against the Patriots. “Going out there tonight I was feeling it, so I was just shooting the ball and they (the Patriots) were letting me.”

With the victory, the Cahillites continue on a three-game win streak having secured two earlier victories during the week against Archbishop Ryan and Bishop McDevitt.

“It’s a huge win for us after losing to Bonner by two-points and then losing to Neumann by two,” said Lundy. “We knew every game was going to be tough and that we are just going to have to compete every given night.”

After the game, Roman’s standout guard, Greer III, and Carroll’s top guard, Hoggard, noted that they were looking forward to getting the chance to play against each other.

“Me and AJ are best friends, but when we get on the court we are enemies. We go at each other every day and it’s always a battle between us,” said Greer III.

“It was competitive. He’s (Lynn Greer) kind of like my best friend and my brother, so everything we do we do competitively the whole game and we want to just let everybody know who’s at the top,” said Hoggard.

The off-court friends also have the same mindset for the remainder of the season – making it to the Palestra.

“We gotta go up from here, no going down. We gotta steal a win on Sunday against Archbishop Ryan so we can get back in a good position so that we can get to the Palestra,” said Hoggard.

“The main goal is to get to the Palestra and win the PCL so we play La Salle next and I’m just looking forward to that game,” said Greer III.

Looking Ahead:  The Patriots 11-5 overall on the season and 6-2 in the Catholic League. The Cahillites are now 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the Catholic League. The Patriots next game will be against Archbishop Ryan on Sunday, January 28th at home at 2:30p.m. The Cahillites will be taking on La Salle College on Monday, January 29th at home at 3:45p.m. On Friday, Feb. 2, Carroll will play away at Father Judge and Roman will play away at Conwell-Egan. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7p.m.
